Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) reported: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) proceeded, leaving Abu Ruhm Kulthum ibn al-Husayn al-Ghifari over Madinah. He set out on the tenth of Ramadan, fasting with the people until at al-Kadid - a water between 'Usfan and Amaj - he broke fast. Then he camped at Marr al-Zahran with ten thousand Muslims, a thousand of Muzaynah and Sulaym, with numbers and Islam in every tribe; all Muhajirun and Ansar accompanied him, none staying behind. News was blinded to Quraysh; nothing of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) reached them, nor knew they what he would do. That night Abu Sufyan ibn Harb, Hakim ibn Hizam, and Budayl ibn Warqa' went out spying for news. Al-'Abbas ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib had met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) on the road. Abu Sufyan ibn al-Harith ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib and 'Abdullah ibn Abi Umayyah ibn al-Mughirah had met him between Madinah and Makkah seeking entry; Umm Salamah spoke for them: "O Messenger of Allah, your cousin, your aunt's son and in-law." He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: > **"I have no need of them. As for my cousin, he tore my honor in Makkah. As for my aunt's son and in-law, he said to me in Makkah what he said."** When that was conveyed, Abu Sufyan with his little son said, "By Allah, you shall permit me or I shall take my little son and wander the earth till we die of thirst and hunger." When that reached the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he softened, permitted them, they entered and embraced Islam. At Marr al-Zahran al-'Abbas said, "Woe to Quraysh. By Allah, if the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) enters Makkah by force before they seek security, it is the ruin of Quraysh forever." He said: I sat upon the white mule of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and rode to al-Arak, hoping to find a woodcutter, milkman, or needy one going to Makkah to inform them of his place, that they seek security before he enters by force. As I rode seeking this, I heard Abu Sufyan and Budayl ibn Warqa' in dispute, Abu Sufyan saying, "Never saw I tonight's fires or camp." Budayl said, "By Allah, these are the fires of Khuza'ah, war has driven them." Abu Sufyan said, "Khuza'ah are too lowly for these to be their fires." I knew his voice: "O Abu Hanzalah." He knew mine: "Abu al-Fadl?" I said, "Yes." He asked, "What is it, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you?" I said, "Woe to you, Abu Sufyan, this is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) among the people. Woe to Quraysh, by Allah." He asked, "What is the stratagem?" I said, "If he captures you he will strike your neck. Ride behind me on this mule till I bring you to the Messenger of Allah and seek security for you." He rode behind me; his two companions returned. I moved him along; whenever we passed a Muslim fire they asked, "Who is this?" Seeing the mule they said, "The uncle of the Messenger of Allah upon his mule." Until we passed the fire of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab. He asked, "Who is this?" and rose. Seeing Abu Sufyan on the mule's rear he said, "Abu Sufyan, enemy of Allah? Praise be to Allah Who enabled us over you without pact or covenant." He hastened toward the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The mule outran him as a mount outruns a slow man. I dismounted, entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and 'Umar entered: "O Messenger of Allah, this is Abu Sufyan, Allah enabled us over him without pact or covenant, let me strike his neck." I said, "O Messenger of Allah, I granted him protection." I sat by the Messenger of Allah, holding his head: "By Allah, none shall converse with him tonight but I." When 'Umar persisted I said, "Gently, 'Umar. Had he been of Banu 'Adi ibn Ka'b you would not say this; you know he is of Banu 'Abd Manaf." He said, "Gently, 'Abbas. By Allah, your Islam the day you embraced it was dearer to me than my father's Islam had he embraced it, for I knew your Islam was dearer to the Messenger of Allah than the Islam of al-Khattab." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: > **"Take him to your lodging, O 'Abbas. In the morning bring him to me."** I lodged him overnight. In the morning I brought him. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw him he said: > **"Woe to you, O Abu Sufyan, has not the time come for you to testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah?"** He said, "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, how noble, forbearing, and joining you are. I thought had there been another with Allah, it would have availed me something." He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: > **"Woe to you, O Abu Sufyan, has not the time come for you to know that I am the Messenger of Allah?"** He said, "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you, how forbearing, noble, and joining you are. By Allah, something of this remained in my soul till now." Al-'Abbas said, "Woe to you, Abu Sufyan, embrace Islam and testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah before your neck is struck." He testified the true testimony and embraced Islam. I said, "O Messenger of Allah, Abu Sufyan loves this pride, grant him something." He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: > **"Yes. Whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is safe. Whoever locks his door is safe. Whoever enters the mosque is safe."** As he turned to leave, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: > **"O 'Abbas, detain him at the strait of the valley by the mountain pass until the armies of Allah pass him and he sees them."** I detained him as ordered. Tribes passed with banners. Each tribe he asked, "Who are these, 'Abbas?" I said, "Banu Sulaym." "What are Sulaym to me?" Then another: "Muzaynah." "What are Muzaynah to me?" Until tribes passed, none but he asked and I named, and he dismissed them. Until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed in the green battalion of Muhajirun and Ansar, only their eyes visible. He said, "Glory be to Allah, who are these, 'Abbas?" I said, "This is the Messenger of Allah among the Muhajirun and Ansar." He said, "None has power against these. By Allah, Abu al-Fadl, your nephew's sovereignty has become great this morning." I said, "O Abu Sufyan, it is prophethood." He said, "Then yes, indeed." I said, "Safety to your people." He went till he cried at the top of his voice: "O Quraysh, this is Muhammad come to you with what you have no power against. Whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is safe." His wife Hind bint 'Utbah rose, seized his mustache: "Kill the fat coward. Evil scout of a people." He said, "Woe to you, let not this deceive you. He has come with what you have no power against. Whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is safe." They said, "Woe to you, what avails your house?" He said, "Whoever locks his door is safe, and whoever enters the mosque is safe." The people dispersed to their houses and the mosque.
