Umm Salama, daughter of Abu Umayya ibn al-Mughira, wife of the Prophet ﷺ, may Allah be pleased with her, said: When we alighted in Abyssinia we dwelt with the best neighbor, the Negus. We were safe in our religion, worshipping Allah alone without harm, hearing nothing hateful. When that reached Quraysh, they conspired to send two resolute men to the Negus with gifts of Meccan wares, the most prized being leather. They gathered much leather, left none of his generals without a gift, and sent it with 'Abdullah ibn Abi Rabi'a al-Makhzumi and 'Amr ibn al-'As ibn Wa'il al-Sahmi, instructing them: Deliver each general his gift before speaking to the Negus about them, then present the Negus his gifts, then ask him to surrender them to you before he speaks to them. So they set out and came to the Negus while we were with him in the best abode with the best neighbor. They gave each general his gift, then said to each: Some foolish youths of ours have fled to the king's land, leaving their people's religion without entering yours, bringing an invented religion we know not nor do you. Their people's nobles have sent us concerning them, to return them. When we speak to the king about them, advise him to surrender them to us without speaking to them, for their people know best their faults. They said: Yes. Then they presented their gifts to the Negus, who accepted them. Then they said: O king, some foolish youths of ours have apostatized to your land, leaving their people's religion, not entering your religion, bringing an invented religion we know not nor do you. Their fathers, sons, and clans have sent us to bring them back, for they best know their faults. Nothing was more hateful to 'Abdullah and 'Amr than that the Negus hear their words, but his generals said: They speak truth, O king; their people best know their faults — surrender them to them to return them to their land and people. The Negus grew angry and said: No, by Allah, I shall not surrender them. A people who sought my neighborhood, alighted in my land, and chose me over others — I will summon them and ask about what these two say. If they are as they claim, I shall surrender them; otherwise I shall protect them and treat them well while they remain. Then he sent for the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. When his messenger came, they gathered and said to one another: What shall we say to the man when we come to him? They said: By Allah, we shall say what our Prophet ﷺ taught and commanded us, whatever happens. When they came to him, and the Negus had summoned his bishops who spread their scriptures around him, he asked: What is this religion by which you left your people, entering neither my religion nor any other nation's religion? The one who spoke to him was Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, peace be upon him. He said: O king, we were a people of ignorance, worshipping idols, eating carrion, committing indecencies, severing kinship, mistreating neighbors, the strong devouring the weak. Thus we remained until Allah sent to us a Messenger from among us whose lineage, truthfulness, trustworthiness, and chastity we know. He called us to Allah, to affirm His Oneness, worship Him, and abandon what we and our fathers worshipped besides Allah of stones and idols. He commanded truthful speech, fulfillment of trust, kinship, good neighborliness, restraint from forbidden things and blood, forbade indecencies, false testimony, devouring the orphan's wealth, and slandering chaste women. He commanded us to worship Allah associating nothing with Him, establish prayer, and give charity. So we believed him, followed what he brought, worshipped Allah alone, declared forbidden what he forbade and lawful what he allowed. Our people attacked us, tortured us, and tried us in our religion to return us to idol worship and lawfulize foul things. When they overpowered and wronged us and barred us from our religion, we left for your land, choosing you over others, desiring your neighborhood, hoping for no injustice with you, O king. The Negus said: Do you have anything of what he brought from Allah? Ja'far said: Yes. He said: Recite it. So he recited the opening of Kaf Ha Ya 'Ayn Sad. By Allah, the Negus wept until his beard was wet, and his bishops wept until their scriptures were wet. Then the Negus said: By Allah, this and what Moses brought come from one lamp. Go forth, for by Allah I shall never surrender them to you. Umm Salama said: When they left him, 'Amr ibn al-'As said: By Allah, tomorrow I shall come to him with what will uproot them. 'Abdullah ibn Abi Rabi'a, the more God-fearing of the two, said: Do not, for they have kinship, though they opposed us. He said: By Allah, I shall tell him they claim Jesus son of Mary is a servant. The next day he said: O king, they say a grave thing about Jesus son of Mary — send for them and ask what they say. He sent for them, and no trial like it had befallen us. They gathered and said: What shall we say about Jesus if he asks? They said: By Allah, we shall say what Allah said and what our Prophet ﷺ brought, whatever happens. When they entered he said: What do you say about Jesus son of Mary? Ja'far ibn Abi Talib said: We say of him what our Prophet ﷺ brought: > **"He is Allah's servant, His Messenger, His spirit, and His word cast to Mary the chaste Virgin."** The Negus struck his hand to the ground, took a stick, and said: Jesus son of Mary did not exceed what you said by even this stick. His generals snorted around him. He said: Even if you snort, by Allah. Go, you are safe in my land — safe means secure — whoever reviles you shall be fined, whoever reviles you shall be fined, whoever reviles you shall be fined. I would not wish a mountain of gold to have harmed any of you — dubr in Abyssinian means mountain. Return their gifts to them; I have no need of them. By Allah, Allah took no bribe from me when He restored my kingdom, that I should take bribes concerning it, nor did people obey me therein that I should obey them therein. So they left him disgraced, their gifts returned. We remained with him in the best abode with the best neighbor. By Allah, while thus, one disputing his kingship descended upon him. Never did we know grief severer than our grief then, fearing he might prevail over the Negus and one arise who knew not our right as the Negus knew it. The Negus marched, with the Nile between the two armies. The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Who will go witness the battle then return to us? Al-Zubayr ibn al-'Awwam said: I — the youngest among them. They inflated a waterskin, placed it upon his chest, and he swam until he reached the side of the Nile where the armies met, witnessed them, while we supplicated Allah for the Negus's victory and consolidation in his land. The Abyssinian affair settled in his favor, and we remained in the best dwelling until we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was in Mecca.
