From Qaylah bint Makhramah, may Allah be pleased with her, that she was under Habib ibn Azhar, brother of Banu Khabbab, and bore him daughters. Then he died, and Ayyub ibn Azhar, their uncle, took her daughters from her. She set out seeking companionship to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in early Islam. Juwayriyah among them, Hudayba, wept, seized by trembling, the youngest, wearing a woolen garment. She carried her with her. While they urged the camel, a hare started up, and the discerning Hudayba said: No, by Allah, your ankle shall ever remain above the ankle of Ayyub in this affair. Then a fox appeared, which she named by other names, forgotten by Abdullah ibn Hassan, and said concerning it what she said concerning the hare. While they journeyed, the camel knelt and trembled, and the discerning Hudayba said: I have attained, by Allah, what seized Ayyub. Qaylah said: It trembled toward her. Woe to you, what shall I do? She said: Turn your garments inside out, roll your back to your belly, and turn the saddle cloths of your camel. She removed her garment, turned it, and rolled her back to her belly. When I did as she ordered, the camel shook, stood, and opened its legs. Hudayba said: Restore your gear. I did as she ordered and restored it. Then we journeyed, and Ayyub came hastening after us with drawn sword. We took refuge at a large settlement, until the camel reached the middle house, a tractable camel. I rushed inside with the girl, and he reached me with the sword, its edge striking part of my head. He said, hand over my brother's daughter, O foul one. I cast her to him, he placed her upon his shoulder and went. I knew him better than the household, and went to a sister of mine married among Banu Shayban, seeking companionship to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in early Islam. While with her one night, she supposing my eyes asleep, her husband came from Sham and said, by your father, I have found for Qaylah a truthful companion. She said, who is he? He said, Hurayth ibn Hassan al-Shaybani, delegate of Bakr ibn Wail to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, this morning. My sister said, woe to me, let not my sister hear of this, lest she go out with the brother of Bakr ibn Wail between ear and eye of the earth with no man of her people. He said, do not mention it to her, for I shall not mention it. She heard what they said. In the morning she saddled her camel, found him not far, and asked his companionship. He said, yes, with honor, his mounts kneeling. She went with him a truthful companion until they came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, while he prayed the dawn prayer with the people. It had been established at daybreak, the stars latticed in the sky, men hardly known in the darkness. She stood with the men, a woman fresh from ignorance. The man beside her in the row said, are you woman or man? She said, woman. He said, you nearly tempted me, pray in the women's row behind you. A row of women had newly formed by the chambers, unseen when she entered. She remained therein until sunrise drew near. She saw a man of presence and cheer, her sight aspiring to see the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, above the people, until a man came after sunrise and said, peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: > **"And upon you be peace and the mercy of Allah."** He wore two worn garments once dyed with saffron, now faded, with a stripped palm stalk in his hand lacking all but two fronds above, sitting squatting. When she saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, humble in sitting, she trembled from fear. His companion said, O Messenger of Allah, the poor woman trembles. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to her, without looking at her while she was behind his back: > **"O poor woman, calmness be upon you."** When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said it, Allah removed what had entered her heart of terror. Her companion, Hurayth ibn Hassan, first man, advanced and pledged Islam for himself and his people, then said, O Messenger of Allah, write between us and Banu Tamim for al-Dahna, none of them to cross to us but a traveler or a neighbor. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: > **"Write for him al-Dahna, boy."** When she saw him inclining to him, though it was her homeland and abode, she said, O Messenger of Allah, he has not pursued the right course. This al-Dahna is at the camel's rest and the sheep's pasture, with the women and sons of Banu Tamim beyond it. He said: > **"Hold, boy. The poor woman has spoken truth. The Muslim is brother of the Muslim. Water and trees suffice them both, and they aid one another against the tempter."** When Hurayth saw his document withheld, he struck one hand upon the other and said, I and you are as it is said: A ewe carries its death in its hooves. She said, by Allah, I knew you, if a guide in darkness, steady at the saddle, chaste with a female companion, until we came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, but blame me not for asking my share when you asked yours. He said, what is your share in al-Dahna? She said, the resting of my camel you ask for your wife's camel. He said, without doubt, I call the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, to witness that I am to you brother and companion while I live, if you uphold this with him. She said, since I began it, I shall not neglect it. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: > **"Is the son of this woman blamed for clarifying the plan and aiding from behind the chamber?"** She wept and said, yes, by Allah, I bore him, O Messenger of Allah, unlawfully conceived, then he fought with you on the day of al-Rabdhah, then went with my provisions from Khaybar, seized by its fever, and died, leaving women upon me. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: > **"By the One in whose Hand is my soul, were you not poor, you would have been dragged upon your face. Can not one of you keep good company with her companion in this world in kindness? When there intervenes between him and her One more entitled to him than her, let her say: My Lord, recompense me for what has passed, and aid me in what remains. By the One in whose Hand is the soul of Muhammad, one of you weeps and her companion weeps for her. O servants of Allah, do not torment your dead."** Then he wrote for her on a piece of red leather: For Qaylah and the women among the daughters of Qaylah, their right shall not be wronged, nor forced upon an undesired marriage, and every believer and Muslim is a helper to them. Do good and do not do evil.
