Mu'adh ibn Jabal, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, set out with the people before the campaign of Tabuk, led them in the dawn prayer when morning came, and then the people mounted. When the sun rose the people grew drowsy after the night journey, and Mu'adh kept close to the Messenger, following his tracks, while the people's mounts scattered from them to the sides of the road, grazing and walking. As Mu'adh followed the Messenger with his she-camel alternately grazing and walking, the she-camel of Bilal, may Allah be pleased with him, stumbled, so Bilal jerked it with the rein and it sprang forward until it came near the she-camel of the Messenger. The Messenger then uncovered his face and looked around to find no one in the army nearer to him than Mu'adh, so he called out to him, O Mu'adh, and Mu'adh answered that he was at his service. The Messenger told him to draw nearer, so he drew near until their two mounts touched one another. The Messenger remarked that he had not imagined the people to be as far from them as they were, and Mu'adh explained that the people had grown drowsy and their mounts had scattered, grazing and walking, to which the Messenger replied that he too had grown drowsy. When Mu'adh saw the cheerfulness of the Messenger and his privacy with him, he asked permission to ask about a matter that had sickened, wearied and grieved him. The Messenger told him to ask whatever he wished, so Mu'adh asked him to tell him of a deed that would admit him into Paradise, saying he would ask about nothing else. The Messenger exclaimed thrice in approval and said he had asked about a momentous matter, yet one easy for whomever Allah intends good, repeating everything thrice out of eagerness that Mu'adh should master it. The Prophet then told him to believe in Allah and the Last Day, establish prayer, give zakat, and worship Allah alone without associating anything with Him until death upon that state, and repeated this thrice at Mu'adh's request. The Messenger then offered to tell him of the head of this affair, its pillar, and the peak of its hump, and upon Mu'adh's eager acceptance explained that its head is testifying that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone without partner and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger, its pillar is establishing prayer and giving zakat, and the peak of its hump is jihad in the path of Allah. He added that he had been commanded to fight the people until they establish prayer, give zakat, and testify to the unity of Allah and the messengership of Muhammad, for when they do so they secure their blood and wealth except by its right, and their reckoning is upon Allah. The Messenger further swore by Him in Whose Hand is his soul that no face grows pale nor foot grows dusty in a deed seeking the degrees of Paradise after the obligatory prayer like jihad in the path of Allah, and that nothing weighs down the scale of a servant like a mount spent upon for him in the path of Allah or mounted in the path of Allah. > **"Ask whatever you wish. Excellent, excellent, excellent, you have asked about a momentous matter, yet it is easy for whomever Allah intends good. Believe in Allah and the Last Day, establish prayer, give zakat, and worship Allah alone without associating anything with Him until you die upon that. The head of this affair is testifying that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone without partner and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger, its pillar is establishing prayer and giving zakat, and the peak of its hump is jihad in the path of Allah. By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, no face grows pale nor foot grows dusty in a deed seeking the degrees of Paradise after the obligatory prayer like jihad in the path of Allah."**
