Rabīʿah al-Aslamī رضي الله عنه reported: I used to serve the Prophet ﷺ, and he said to me, "O Rabīʿah, will you not marry?" I said: No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I do not wish to marry, and I have nothing with which to maintain a wife, and I do not wish anything to distract me from you. He turned away from me, and I served him as I served him. Then he said to me a second time, "O Rabīʿah, will you not marry?" I said: I do not wish to marry; I have nothing with which to maintain a wife, and I do not wish anything to distract me from you. He turned away from me. Then I returned to myself and said: By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ knows better than I what benefits me in this world and the Hereafter. By Allah, if he says to me, "Will you marry," I shall surely say, "Yes, O Messenger of Allah, command me as you wish." Then he said to me, "O Rabīʿah, will you not marry?" I said: Yes indeed, command me as you wish. He said, "Go to the household of so-and-so," a clan of the Ansār among whom there had been some distance from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, "and say to them: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has sent me to you, commanding you to marry me to so-and-so," naming a woman among them. So I went to them and said to them: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ has sent me to you, commanding you to marry me to so-and-so. They said: Welcome to the Messenger of Allah and to the messenger of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. By Allah, the messenger of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ shall not return except with his need fulfilled. So they married me to her, treated me kindly, and did not ask me for proof, though I had no dowry with me. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "O Buraydah al-Aslamī, gather for him the weight of a date-pit in gold." So they gathered for me the weight of a date-pit in gold. I took what they had gathered for me and brought it to the Prophet ﷺ. He said, "Take this to them and say to them: This is her dowry." So I went to them and said: This is her dowry. They accepted it, were pleased with it, and said: Much and good. Then I returned to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ grieving, and he said, "O Rabīʿah, why are you grieving?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, I have never seen people more generous than them. They were pleased with what I brought them, treated me well, and said, "Much and good," yet I have nothing with which to hold a wedding feast. He said, "O Buraydah, gather for him a sheep." So they gathered for me a great fat ram. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me, "Go to ʿĀʾishah and tell her to send the basket in which there is food." So I went to her and told her what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had commanded me, and she said: This is the basket; in it are seven measures of barley. By Allah, we have no food besides it this morning. Take it. So I took it and brought it to the Prophet ﷺ and informed him of what ʿĀʾishah had said. He said, "Take this to them and say to them: Let this become bread with you by morning, and this meat stew." They said: As for the bread, we shall suffice you of it, but as for the ram, you suffice us of it. So I and some men of Aslam took the ram, slaughtered it, skinned it, and cooked it, and by morning we had bread and meat. I held a wedding feast and invited the Prophet ﷺ. Then he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ later gave me land and gave Abū Bakr land, and worldly means came to us. We differed over a cluster of dates on a palm tree. I said: It is within my boundary. Abū Bakr said: It is within my boundary. There were words between me and Abū Bakr, and Abū Bakr said to me a word I disliked, and he regretted it. He said to me: O Rabīʿah, say back to me the like of it, so that there may be retaliation. I said: I shall not do it. Abū Bakr said: You shall surely say it, or I shall complain of you to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. I said: I shall not do it. He left the land and Abū Bakr set out to the Prophet ﷺ, and I set out following him. Some men of Aslam came and said to me: May Allah have mercy on Abū Bakr, for what does he seek the Messenger of Allah ﷺ against, when he is the one who said to you what he said? I said: Do you know who this is? This is Abū Bakr al-Siddīq. This is the second of two. This is the elder of the Muslims. Beware, lest he turn and see you aiding me against him, and he becomes angry, and comes to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who becomes angry for his anger, and Allah Almighty becomes angry for the anger of them both, and Rabīʿah perishes. He said: What do you command us? He said: Go back. So Abū Bakr, may Allah have mercy on him, set out to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and I followed him alone until he came to the Prophet ﷺ, and he narrated the account as it had been. He raised his head to me and said to me, "O Rabīʿah, what is between you and al-Siddīq?" I said: O Messenger of Allah, it was such-and-such. He said to me a word I disliked. He said to me: Say as I said, so that there may be retaliation, but I refused. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Yes, do not answer him back. Rather say: May Allah forgive you, O Abū Bakr." So I said: May Allah forgive you, O Abū Bakr. Al-Hasan said: Then Abū Bakr, may Allah have mercy on him, turned away weeping. > **"O Rabīʿah, will you not marry? Do not answer him back. Rather say: May Allah forgive you, O Abū Bakr."**
