Ibn ʿĀmir — or Abū ʿĀmir, or Abū Mālik — narrated: While the Prophet ﷺ was sitting in a gathering with his Companions, Gabriel عليه السلام came to him in an unfamiliar form, appearing like a man from among the Muslims. He gave the greeting of salām, and the Prophet ﷺ returned it. Then Gabriel placed his hand upon the knees of the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is Islam?" He ﷺ said: > **"That you surrender your face to Allah, testify that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah and that Muḥammad is His slave and Messenger, establish prayer, and pay zakāh."** He asked, "If I do that, have I embraced Islam?" He ﷺ said: > **"Yes."** Then he asked, "What is faith?" He ﷺ said: > **"That you believe in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Scripture, the Prophets, death, life after death, Paradise, the Fire, the Reckoning, the Scale, and the divine decree entirely, both the good of it and the evil of it."** He asked, "If I do that, have I believed?" He ﷺ said: > **"Yes."** Then he asked, "What is excellence, O Messenger of Allah?" He ﷺ said: > **"That you worship Allah as though you see Him, for if you do not see Him, He surely sees you."** He asked, "If I do that, have I attained excellence?" He ﷺ said: > **"Yes."** The narrator said: We could hear the reply of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, but we could neither see the one speaking to him nor hear his words. He asked, "When is the Hour, O Messenger of Allah?" The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: > **"Glory be to Allah! Five matters belong to the unseen, which none knows except Allah: {Indeed, with Allah alone is knowledge of the Hour; He sends down the rain, and He knows what is in the wombs. No soul knows what it will earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in what land it will die. Indeed, Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware} [Luqmān: 34]. However, if you wish, I can tell you of two signs that will occur before it."** He said, "Tell me." He ﷺ said: > **"When you see the female slave give birth to her master, and the builders construct increasingly lofty buildings, and the impoverished, barefoot destitute become the leaders of the people."** He asked, "And who are they, O Messenger of Allah?" He ﷺ said: > **"The Arab bedouins."** The narrator said: Then the man turned and departed. When we could no longer see his path, the Prophet ﷺ said: > **"Glory be to Allah! That was Gabriel; he came to teach the people their religion. By the One in Whose Hand is the soul of Muḥammad, he never came to me previously without me recognizing him, except on this occasion."**
