Uncle, say: There is no god but God, a word for which I will plead with you with God.” Then Abu Jahl and Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah said to him: O Abu Talib, Do you renounce the religion of Abdul Muttalib? They continued speaking to him until he said the last thing he spoke to them: following the religion of Abdul Mutallib. Then the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: “I will ask forgiveness for you.” Unless I forbid you.” Then it was revealed: “It is not for the Prophet and those who have believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists,” and it was revealed: “Indeed, you do not guide whom you love.” (Peace Be Upon Him)

Yusuf ibn Sa'id narrated to us — Hajjaj ibn Muhammad narrated to us — Layth ibn Sa'd narrated to us — 'Uqayl narrated to me, from Ibn Shihab, who said: 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Abd Allah ibn Ka'b ibn Malik informed me that 'Abd Allah ibn Ka'b ibn Malik — who had been the guide of Ka'b among his sons when he lost his sight — said: "I heard Ka'b ibn Malik narrating his account when he stayed behind from the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, during the expedition of Tabuk. He said: 'While I was sitting in that state which Allah has mentioned of us — my soul had become constricted upon me, and the earth had become constricted upon me despite its vastness — I heard a caller calling out from upon a mountain with the loudest voice: O Ka'b ibn Malik, receive glad tidings! I fell prostrating, and I knew that relief had come. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, announced Allah's acceptance of our repentance when he prayed the Fajr prayer. The people came rushing to give us glad tidings. People went to my two companions with glad tidings. A man galloped a horse toward me, and a runner from Aslam hastened to a mountain. The voice was swifter than the horse. When the one whose voice I had heard came to me, he gave me glad tidings. I took off my two garments and gave them to them both as a token of joy — by Allah, I owned nothing else — and I borrowed two garments and put them on. I set out toward the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. The people met me in groups, congratulating me on the repentance, saying: May Allah's repentance bring you joy! Ka'b said: Until I entered the mosque, and there was the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, sitting with the people around him. Talha ibn 'Ubayd Allah came hastening toward me until he shook my hand and congratulated me. By Allah, no man from the Muhajirun stood up for me other than him, and I shall never forget that for Talha. Ka'b said: When I gave the salam to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, he said — and his face was beaming with joy: Receive the glad tidings of the best day that has come upon you since your mother gave birth to you. I said: From you, O Messenger of Allah, or from Allah? He said: No, rather from Allah. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, when he was joyful, his face would shine as if it were a piece of the moon, and we used to recognize that in him. When I sat before him, I said: O Messenger of Allah, indeed, part of my repentance is that I divest myself of my wealth as a charity to Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, and to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: Hold on to some of your wealth, for that is better for you. I said: Then I shall hold on to my share that is in Khaybar. I said: O Messenger of Allah, indeed, Allah the Exalted only saved me through truthfulness, and indeed, part of my repentance is that I shall not speak except the truth for as long as I remain. By Allah, no Muslim has Allah tested in truthfulness of speech since I mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, better than He has tested me. And you do not know — since I mentioned that to the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace — any lie from me. And I hope that Allah will protect me in what remains. Then Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, revealed: Allah has turned in repentance to the Prophet, and the Muhajirun, and the Ansar who followed him in the hour of difficulty — reciting until: the truthful ones. By Allah, Allah has not blessed me with any blessing after He guided me to Islam that is greater in my soul than the truthfulness of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, on that day — that I did not lie to him and perish as those who lied to him perished — until the revelation came down with the worst of what He said to anyone: They will swear by Allah to you when you return to them, that you may turn away from them — until: the transgressors. Ka'b said: And we three were left behind from the affair of those from whom the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, accepted when they swore to him. He pledged allegiance to them and sought forgiveness for them. The Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, deferred our affair until Allah decided it. For that reason, Allah, the Almighty and Majestic, said: And upon the three who were left behind. That which Allah mentions is not about staying behind from the expedition; rather, it is His deferring us and His postponing our affair from those who swore to him and offered excuses to him and from whom He accepted."

A herald called out: O people of Paradise, indeed you have a promise from your Lord that He wants to fulfill for you. They said: Didn’t he make it white? Our faces, and He makes our scales heavy, and He admits us to Paradise, and He saves us from Hell. He said: Then He will remove the veil, and they will look at Him. By God, what is it? God gave them something more beloved to them than looking at Him, and something more pleasing to their eyes.”
