Zayd ibn al-Dathinah al-Ansari, then of Banu Bayadah: Muhammad ibn Amr ibn Khalid al-Harrani narrated to us, my father narrated to me, Ibn Lahiah narrated, from Abu al-Aswad, from Urwah, who said: Part of the account of Khubayb ibn Abd Allah al-Ansari, then of Banu Amr ibn Awf, and Asim ibn Thabit ibn al-Aflah ibn Amr ibn Awf, and Zayd ibn al-Dathinah al-Ansari of Banu Bayadah, is that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sent them as scouts toward Makkah to inform him of the news of Quraysh. They traveled by the Najd road until, when they were at al-Raji of Najd, Banu Lihyan of Hudhayl intercepted them. As for Asim ibn Thabit, he fought with his sword until he was killed. As for Khubayb and Zayd ibn al-Dathinah, they ascended the mountain and the people could not overcome them until they gave them covenants and pledges; they came down to them, and they bound them with bonds, then brought them to Makkah and sold them to Quraysh. As for Khubayb, Utbah ibn al-Harith ibn Nawfal, brother of Husayn ibn al-Harith, bought him, and Abu Ihab ibn Aziz ibn Qays ibn Suwayd ibn Rabiah ibn Adas ibn Abd Allah ibn Darim shared with him in buying him, and Qays ibn Suwayd ibn Rabiah was the maternal brother of Amir ibn Nawfal, their mother the daughter of Nahshal al-Tamimiyyah, and Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl, al-Akhnas ibn Sharnun ibn Ilaj ibn Ghubrah al-Thaqafi, Ubaydah ibn Hakim al-Sulami then al-Dhakwani, Umayyah ibn Utbah ibn Hammam ibn Hanzalah of Banu Darim and Banu al-Hadrami, Saiyah ibn Abd Allah ibn Abi Qays of Banu Amir ibn Luayy, and Safwan ibn Umayyah ibn Khalaf ibn Wahb al-Jumahi — they handed him to Utbah ibn al-Harith, who imprisoned him in a house. He stayed with him as long as Allah willed. A woman of the family of Utbah ibn al-Harith ibn Amir would release him and feed him. He said to her: When the people intend to kill me, inform me before that. When they intended to kill him, she informed him. He said to her: Seek for me an iron blade to clean myself with — meaning to shave his pubic hair. The son of the woman who was attending to him entered with the razor in his hand; he took the boy by the hand and said: Has Allah given you power over us? She said: This is not my opinion of you. Then he handed her the razor and said: I was only joking. The people who had shared in him took him out, and the people of Makkah went out with them, with a wooden cross, until when they were at al-Tanim they set up that wood and crucified him upon it. The one who carried out his killing was Utbah ibn al-Harith; Abu Husayn was small and was with the people. They killed him for al-Harith ibn Amir, who had been killed on the day of Badr as a disbeliever. Khubayb said to them at his killing: Release me from the bonds until I pray two units — they released him, and he prayed two light units, then turned and said: Were it not that you would think I am afraid of death, I would have lengthened them; therefore I shortened them. He said: O Allah, I see only the face of an enemy; O Allah, I find no messenger to Your Messenger, so convey my greeting to him. Jibril, peace be upon him, came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and informed him of that. Khubayb said as they raised him upon the wood: O Allah, count them in number, kill them separately, and leave none of them. The sons of the polytheists who had been killed on the day of Badr killed Khubayb ibn Adi. When they put weapons into him while crucified, they called to him and adjured him: Would you love Muhammad in your place? He said: No, by the great Allah, I would not love that even a thorn prick his foot as ransom for me. They laughed. Khubayb said when they raised him upon the wood — the confederates, the confederates — a cut-off limb. As for Zayd ibn al-Dithinnah, Safwan ibn Umayyah ibn Khalaf bought him and killed him for his father Umayyah ibn Khalaf; Nistas, freedman of Banu Jumah, killed him. Both were killed at al-Tanim. Amr ibn Umayyah buried Khubayb. Hassan ibn Thabit said concerning Khubayb: verses ending at the edge ...
