358 - Hubaysh ibn Khalid al-Khuzai. Hubaysh ibn Khalid, Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), reported: when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) left Makkah emigrating to Madinah - he, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), Abu Bakr's freedman Amir ibn Fuhayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), and their guide al-Laythi Abd Allah ibn al-Urayqit - they passed the two tents of Umm Mabad al-Khuzaiyyah. She was a mature, sturdy woman sitting at the tent-yard, giving drink and food. They asked her for meat and dates to buy, but found nothing of that with her; the folk were without provisions, in drought. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) looked at a ewe in the tent's corner and said: What is this ewe, O Umm Mabad? She said: Weakness kept it from the flock. He said: Is there milk in it? She said: It is too exhausted for that. He said: Do you permit me to milk it? She said: Yes, may my father and mother be ransom for you; if you see milk in it, milk it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called for it, wiped its udder with his hand, named Allah, mighty and majestic, and supplicated for it concerning her ewe. It spread its legs for him, yielded milk and flowed. He called for a vessel that would satisfy a group, and milked into it copiously till foam rose. Then he gave her to drink till she was quenched, gave his companions till they were quenched, and drank last of them (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Then they rested, then he milked into it a second time after the first till he filled the vessel, left it with her, pledged her and departed. Soon after, her husband Abu Mabad came driving lean goats, staggering from thinness in the forenoon, their marrow scant. When Abu Mabad saw the milk he marveled and said: Whence is this milk for you, O Umm Mabad, when the ewe is away grazing and barren, and there is no milch beast in the house? She said: No, by Allah, except that a blessed man passed us, of such and such state. He said: Describe him to me, O Umm Mabad. She said: I saw a man of manifest radiance, bright-faced, fair in form; no belly faulted him nor small head belittled him; comely, in his eyes intense black-and-white, in his lashes length, in his voice huskiness, in his neck loftiness, in his beard fullness; arched-browed, joined; if silent, dignity upon him, if speaking, splendor raised him; most beautiful and radiant of men from afar, sweetest and finest near; sweet of speech, decisive, neither babbling nor meager, as if his words beads of a necklace cascading; middle-statured, neither despaired of for tallness nor scorned by the eye for shortness; a branch between two branches, the freshest of the three in look and finest in rank; companions surround him - if he speaks they listen to his word, if he commands they race to his command; served, gathered-about, neither frowning nor discredited. Abu Mabad said: By Allah, he is the companion of Quraysh whose affair was told us at Makkah; I had resolved to accompany him and shall if I find a way. A voice rose at Makkah, high, while they heard the voice knowing not its owner, saying [verses omitted in source extract]. When Hassan ibn Thabit heard that, he answered the caller with verse [fragment preserved in source]. Musa ibn Harun added in his hadith: Mujahid ibn Musa narrated to us from Mukram, who told us variant wordings of the description (thujlah/saqla vs thuhlah/sala): the correct is thujlah (bigness of belly) and sala (smallness of head) - meaning he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was neither big-bellied nor small-headed; and variants wataf (length of lashes) and sahal (hoarseness); and la yabasa min tul (corrected: not over-tall); and la abis wa la mufannad, meaning neither frowning nor belied.
