255 - Hajjaj ibn Ilat al-Sulami: Ishaq ibn Ibrahim al-Dabari narrated to us, from Abd al-Razzaq, from Mamar, from Thabit al-Bunani, from Anas ibn Malik, who said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) conquered Khaybar, al-Hajjaj ibn Ilat said: O Messenger of Allah, I have wealth in Mecca and family there, and I want to go to them, so permit me if I speak against you or say something. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave him permission to say whatever he wished. He went to his wife when he arrived and said: Gather whatever you have, for I want to buy from the spoils of Muhammad and his Companions, for they have been exposed and their wealth taken. This spread in Mecca, the Muslims were downcast, and the polytheists showed joy. The news reached al-Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib, and he was stricken and could not stand, then he sent a servant to al-Hajjaj ibn Ilat: Woe to you, what have you brought, and what are you saying? What Allah has promised is better than what you brought. Al-Hajjaj said: Convey peace to Abu al-Fadl, and tell him to make room for me in one of his houses so I may come to him, for the news is what will please him. His servant came, and when he reached the door he said: Glad tidings, O Abu al-Fadl. Al-Abbas leapt for joy and kissed him between the eyes, and he told him what al-Hajjaj had said, so he freed him. Then al-Hajjaj came to him and told him that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had conquered Khaybar and taken their wealth as spoils, and the shares of Allah were distributed in their wealth, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) chose Safiyya bint Huyayy for himself and gave her the choice between freeing her and being his wife or rejoining her family, and she chose to be freed and be his wife. But I came for what I had here, wanting to collect it and take it away, so I asked permission of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he permitted me to say what I wished, so conceal this from me for three days, then mention what you like. His wife gathered her jewelry and goods and gave them to him, and he departed with them. After three days, al-Abbas went to al-Hajjajs wife and asked: What did your husband do? She told him he had left on such-and-such day, and said: May Allah not grieve you, O Abu al-Fadl, what reached you distressed us. He said: Yes, may Allah not grieve me; by praise of Allah it was only what we loved: Allah granted Khaybar to His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) chose Safiyya for himself. If you need your husband, join him. She said: I think, by Allah, you are truthful. He said: By Allah I am truthful, and the matter is as I told you. Then he went to the gatherings of Quraysh, and when he passed them they said: Nothing but good befalls you, O Abu al-Fadl. He said: Nothing but good befell me, by praise of Allah; al-Hajjaj ibn Ilat told me that Allah granted Khaybar to His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the shares of Allah were distributed, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) chose Safiyya for himself. He asked me to conceal it for three days; he only came to take his wealth and what he had here, then leave. So Allah turned the gloom of the Muslims upon the polytheists; the Muslims who had entered their houses downcast came out to al-Abbas, and he told them the news, so the Muslims rejoiced, and Allah returned the gloom, rage, and grief upon the polytheists.
