Ishaq b. Muhammad al-Harraji al-Makki and al-Abbas b. Hamdan al-Hanafi al-Asbahani narrated to us; they said: Abd al-Jabbar b. al-Ala narrated to us: Abdullah b. Maymun al-Qaddah narrated to us: Jafar b. Muhammad narrated to us: from his father, from Ali b. Husayn, who said: I heard my father say: Three days before the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), Jibril, peace be upon him, descended upon him and said: O Muhammad, Allah, mighty and majestic, has sent me to you to honor you, to prefer you, and as a distinction for you. He asks you about what He knows better than you: He says: How do you find yourself? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: I find myself, O Jibril, grieved, and I find myself, O Jibril, distressed. He said: When the third day came, Jibril, peace be upon him, descended, the Angel of Death, peace be upon them both, descended, and with them descended an angel in the air called Ismail, over seventy thousand angels, with no angel among them but over seventy thousand angels, escorted by Jibril, peace be upon him. He said: O Muhammad, Allah, mighty and majestic, has sent me to you to honor you, to prefer you, and as a distinction for you. He asks you about what He knows better than you: He says: How do you find yourself? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: I find myself, O Jibril, grieved, and I find myself, O Jibril, distressed. He said: The Angel of Death sought permission at the door. Jibril, peace be upon him, said: O Muhammad, this is the Angel of Death seeking permission to enter upon you; he has never sought permission from any human before you, nor will he seek permission from any human after you. He said: Give him permission. Jibril, peace be upon him, gave him permission. He came forward until he stood before him and said: O Muhammad, Allah, mighty and majestic, has sent me to you and commanded me to obey you in whatever you command me: if you command me to take your soul I shall take it, and if you dislike it I shall leave it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him: Will you do so, O Angel of Death? He said: Yes, and with that I have been commanded: to obey you in whatever you command me. Jibril, peace be upon him, said to him: Allah, mighty and majestic, has longed to meet you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Proceed with what you have been commanded. Jibril said to him: This is my last treading upon the earth; my need was only in this world. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed away and the condolence came, a visitor came whose voice they heard but whose person they did not see, saying: Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah and His blessings; every soul shall taste death. In Allah is consolation from every calamity, a successor from every perishing one, and recompense for all that is missed. So trust in Allah and hope in Him, for the afflicted is he who is deprived of reward. Peace be upon you and the mercy of Allah.
