Muhammad al-Yamami narrated to us: Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us: Ma'mar informed us, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, from Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) prayed the afternoon prayer; when he was in the fourth, al-Hasan and al-Husayn came until they rode upon the back of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him); he placed them before him. And al-Husayn came forward, so the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) carried al-Hasan upon his right shoulder and al-Husayn upon his left shoulder, then said: O people, shall I not inform you of the best of people in grandfather and grandmother? Shall I not inform you of the best of people in paternal uncle and paternal aunt? Shall I not inform you of the best of people in maternal uncle and maternal aunt? Shall I not inform you of the best of people in father and mother? They are al-Hasan and al-Husayn: their grandfather is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), their grandmother is Khadijah bint Khuwaylid, their mother is Fatimah, daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), their father is Ali b. Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, their paternal uncle is Ja'far b. Abi Talib, their paternal aunt is Umm Hani bint Abi Talib, their maternal uncle is al-Qasim, son of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and their maternal aunts are Zaynab, Ruqayyah and Umm Kulthum, daughters of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Abd al-Rahman al-Washsha narrated to us: Zayd b. al-Hasan al-Anmati narrated to us: Ma'ruf b. Kharrabudh narrated to us, from Abu al-Tufayl, from Hudhayfah b. Asid al-Ghifari, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: O people, I am a forerunner for you, and you will come to me at the Basin - a basin wider than what is between San'a and Busra, in it the number of stars of cups of silver. And I shall ask you, when you come to me, about the two weighty things; so look at how you succeed me concerning them: the greater cause is the Book of Allah, mighty and majestic - a cause, one end of which is in the hand of Allah and the other end in your hands; so hold fast to it, and do not go astray nor alter. And my progeny, my Household; for the Subtle, the Aware has informed me that they will never end until they come to me at the Basin.

He said: Contentment of the soul with what Allah, most high, apportioned for it, even if little; wealth is only wealth of the soul. He said: What is poverty? He said: Greed of the soul for everything. He said: What is defensibility? He said: Severity of might, and contending with the mightiest of people. He said: What is humiliation? He said: Panic at a believed report. He said: What is dullness? He said: Playing with the beard, and much spitting when addressing. He said: What is boldness? He said: Agreeing with peers. He said: What is affectation? He said: Your speaking about what does not concern you. He said: What is glory? He said: To give despite indebtedness, and to pardon offenses. He said: What is intellect? He said: Guarding the heart whatever you entrust it with. He said: What is folly? He said: Opposing your imam, and raising your speech over him. He said: What is good praise? He said: Doing good and abandoning evil. He said: What is resolve? He said: Long deliberation, and gentleness with rulers. He said: What is foolishness? Then Ali said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: No poverty is severer than ignorance, no wealth returns more than intellect, no solitude is lonelier than conceit, no support succeeds more than consultation, no intellect is like planning, no lineage is like good character, no scrupulousness is like restraint, no worship is like reflection, no faith is like modesty and patience; the bane of speech is lying, the bane of knowledge is forgetting, the bane of forbearance is foolishness, the bane of worship is languor, the bane of refinement is insolence, the bane of courage is transgression, the bane of generosity is reminding, the bane of beauty is vanity, and the bane of lineage is boasting. O my son, never belittle any man you see: if he is better than you, consider him your father; if he is like you, he is your brother; and if he is younger than you, consider him your son. Abu al-Qasim said: None narrated this hadith from Shu'bah except Muhammad b. Abdullah Abu Raja al-Habati; Uthman b. Sa'id al-Zayyat is alone in it, and it is not narrated from Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, except with this chain.

So she poured water in it, and he cast the letters into the water; he did not open any of them nor look at it. So I said: O Abu Muhammad, from whom are these letters? He said: From the people of Iraq - a people who neither return to truth nor fall short of falsehood. I do not fear them for myself, but I fear them for that one - and he pointed to al-Husayn.

When they reached the mosque with him, Banu Umayyah stood up; so Abdullah b. Ja'far stood and said: I heard him say: If they prevent you, bury me with my mother.

Zakariyya b. Yahya al-Saji narrated to us: Muhammad b. Bashshar Bundar narrated to us: Abd al-Malik b. al-Sabbah al-Misma'i narrated to us: Imran b. Hudayr narrated to us - I think from Abu Mijlaz - who said: Amr b. al-As and al-Mughirah b. Shu'bah said to Muawiyah: al-Hasan b. Ali is tongue-tied, though he has speech and opinion; he has known his speech, so he will speak speech and find no speech. He said: Do not do it. But they insisted upon him. So Amr ascended the pulpit, mentioned Ali and attacked him. Then al-Mughirah b. Shu'bah ascended, praised Allah and extolled Him, then attacked Ali, may Allah be pleased with him. Then it was said to al-Hasan b. Ali: Ascend. He said: I shall neither ascend nor speak until you grant me that if I speak truth you will confirm me, and if I speak falsehood you will belie me. So they granted him; he ascended the pulpit, praised Allah and extolled Him, then said: By Allah, O Amr, and you, O Mughirah, do you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: May Allah curse the driver and the rider, one of them so-and-so? They said: O Allah, yes, indeed. He said: I adjure you by Allah, O Muawiyah and O Mughirah, do you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) cursed Amr with a curse for every rhyme he uttered? They said: O Allah, yes. He said: I adjure you by Allah, O Amr, and you, O Muawiyah b. Abi Sufyan, do you know that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) cursed the people of this one? They said: Yes. al-Hasan said: I praise Allah who - you attacked one who is free of this. And he mentioned the hadith.
