Muhammad b. Ahmad b. al-Bara narrated to us: Abd al-Mun'im b. Idris b. Sinan narrated to us, from his father, from Wahb b. Munabbih, from Jabir b. Abdullah and Abdullah b. Abbas concerning the saying of Allah, mighty and majestic: (When the help of Allah and the victory comes, and you see the people entering the religion of Allah in crowds, so glorify with the praise of your Lord and seek His forgiveness; indeed He is Accepting of repentance). He said: When it was revealed, Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: O Jibril, my soul has been announced. Jibril, peace be upon him, said: The Hereafter is better for you than the first, and your Lord will give you and you will be pleased. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered Bilal to call out: prayer in congregation. So the Emigrants and Helpers gathered at the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Then he ascended the pulpit, praised Allah, mighty and majestic, and extolled Him, then delivered a sermon at which hearts trembled and eyes wept. Then he said: O people, what kind of prophet was I to you? They said: May Allah reward you from a prophet with good; you were to us like a merciful father, and like a sincere compassionate brother; you conveyed the messages of Allah, mighty and majestic, delivered to us His revelation, and called to the path of your Lord with wisdom and good admonition; so may Allah reward you on our behalf with the best He rewards a prophet on behalf of his nation. He said to them: O company of Muslims, I adjure you by Allah and by my right upon you: whoever has a wrong from me, let him stand and retaliate from me. No one stood up to him. So he adjured them a second time, and no one stood up to him. So he adjured them a third time: O company of Muslims, I adjure you by Allah and by my right upon you: whoever has a wrong from me, let him stand and retaliate from me before retaliation on the Resurrection. So an old shaykh called Ukashah stood up from among the Muslims and stepped over the Muslims until he stood before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you; were it not that you adjured us time after time, I would not be one to venture upon anything of this. I was with you in a raid, and when Allah, mighty and majestic, gave us victory and aided His Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and we were on the return, my she-camel came alongside your she-camel, so I dismounted from the camel and drew near you to kiss your thigh; so you raised the stick and struck my side, and I do not know whether it was deliberate from you or you intended to strike the camel. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: I seek refuge for you by the majesty of Allah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) should deliberately strike you. O Bilal, go to the house of Fatimah and bring me the unpeeled stick. So Bilal left the mosque with his hand upon the crown of his head, calling out: This is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) giving retaliation from himself. So he knocked at the door of Fatimah and said: O daughter of the Messenger of Allah, hand me the unpeeled stick. Fatimah said: O Bilal, what will my father do with the stick; this is neither a day of pilgrimage nor a day of battle? He said: O Fatimah, how unaware you are of what your father is in; the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is bidding farewell to religion and leaving the world, and giving retaliation from himself. Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, said: O Bilal, who is it whose soul would be content to retaliate from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)? O Bilal, tell al-Hasan and al-Husayn to stand up to this man so he retaliates from them both, and not let him retaliate from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). So Bilal entered the mosque and handed the stick to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) handed the stick to Ukashah. When Abu Bakr and Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, looked at that, they stood and said: O Ukashah, here we are before you, so retaliate from us and do not retaliate from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to them: Proceed, O Abu Bakr, and you, O Umar, proceed; for Allah has known your place and your standing. So Ali b. Abi Talib stood and said: O Ukashah, I am in life before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and my soul is not content that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) be struck; here is my back and my belly, retaliate from me with your hand and flog me a hundred, and do not retaliate from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: O Ali, sit; for Allah, mighty and majestic, has known your standing and your intention. And al-Hasan and al-Husayn, may Allah be pleased with them both, stood and said: O Ukashah, do you not know that we are the grandsons of the Messenger of Allah? So retaliation from us is like retaliation from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to them: Sit, O delight of my eye; may Allah not forget for you both this standing. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: O Ukashah, strike if you are striking. He said: O Messenger of Allah, you struck me while I was bare of my belly. So he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) uncovered his belly, and the Muslims cried out weeping and said: Do you think Ukashah will strike the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)? When Ukashah looked at the whiteness of the belly of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) as if white cotton cloth, he could not but fall upon it and kiss his belly, saying: May my father and mother be sacrificed for you; whose soul could bear to retaliate from you? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to him: Either strike, or pardon. He said: I have pardoned you, hoping that Allah will pardon me on the Resurrection. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Whoever wishes to look at my companion in Paradise, let him look at this shaykh. So the Muslims stood and began kissing between the eyes of Ukashah, saying: Glad tidings to you, glad tidings to you; you have attained the highest ranks and the companionship of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) fell ill from that day, remaining ill for eighteen days with the people visiting him. And he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was born on Monday, sent on Monday, and died on Monday. When it was Sunday he grew heavy in his illness, so Bilal called the call to prayer, then stood at the door and called: Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah, and the mercy of Allah; prayer, may Allah have mercy on you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) heard the voice of Bilal, so Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, said: O Bilal, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is today occupied with himself. So Bilal entered the mosque, and when dawn brightened, he said: By Allah, I shall not establish it unless I seek permission from my master, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). So he returned and stood at the door and called: Peace be upon you, O Messenger, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings; prayer, may Allah have mercy on you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) heard the voice of Bilal and said: Enter, O Bilal; the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is occupied with himself; order Abu Bakr to pray with the people. So he went out with his hand upon the crown of his head, saying: O succour of Allah, and severance of my hope, and breaking of my back; would that my mother had not borne me, and since she bore me, that I had not witnessed this day from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Then he said: O Abu Bakr, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) orders you to pray with the people. So Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, stepped forward for the people - and he was a tender man - and when he looked at the emptiness of the place of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), he could not but fall unconscious, and the Muslims cried out weeping. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) heard the clamour of the people and said: What is this clamour? They said: The clamour of the Muslims at losing you, O Messenger of Allah. So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called Ali b. Abi Talib and Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, and leaned upon them both, and went out to the mosque and prayed with the people two light units, then turned his handsome face to them and said: O company of Muslims, I entrust you to Allah; you are in the hope of Allah and His security, and Allah is my successor over you. O company of Muslims, upon you is fear of Allah and guarding obedience to Him after me, for I am leaving the world; this is the first day of the Hereafter and the last day of the days of the world. When it was Monday his affair grew severe, and Allah, mighty and majestic, revealed to the angel of death, peace be upon him, to descend to My beloved and My chosen, Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), in the best form, and be gentle with him in taking his soul. So the angel of death, peace be upon him, descended and stood at the door like a Bedouin, then said: Peace be upon you, O people of the house of prophethood, and mine of messengership, and frequentation of angels; may I enter? Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, said to Fatimah: Answer the man. Fatimah said: May Allah reward your walking, O servant of Allah; the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is occupied with himself. So he called a second time, and Aisha said: O Fatimah, answer the man. Fatimah said: May Allah reward your walking, O servant of Allah; the Messenger is occupied with himself. Then he called a third time: Peace be upon you, O people of the house of prophethood, and mine of messengership, and frequentation of angels; may I enter? There is no escape from entering. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) heard the voice of the angel of death, peace be upon him, and said: O Fatimah, who is at the door? She said: O Messenger of Allah, a man at the door seeks permission to enter; we answered him time after time, then in the third he called with a voice at which my skin shivered and my limbs trembled. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to her: O Fatimah, do you know who is at the door? This is the destroyer of pleasures, the separator of gatherings, the widower of wives, the orphaner of children, the ruiner of houses, the builder of graves; this is the angel of death, peace be upon him. Enter, may Allah have mercy on you, O angel of death. So the angel of death entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: O angel of death, have you come to me as a visitor or as a taker? He said: I have come to you as a visitor and a taker, and Allah, mighty and majestic, ordered me not to enter upon you except by your permission, and not to take your soul except by your permission; if you permit, and otherwise I shall return to my Lord, mighty and majestic. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: O angel of death, where did you leave my beloved Jibril? He said: I left him in the lowest heaven with the angels consoling him concerning you. It was not swifter than that Jibril, peace be upon him, came to him and sat at his head. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: O Jibril, this is the departure from the world, so give me glad tidings of what is for me with Allah. He said: I give you glad tidings, O beloved of Allah, that I have left the doors of heaven opened, and the angels standing in rows upon rows with greeting and sweet basil greeting your soul, O Muhammad. He said: Praise be to the face of my Lord; and give me glad tidings, O Jibril. He said: I give you glad tidings that the doors of the gardens have been opened, their rivers made to flow, their trees lowered, and their houris adorned for the coming of your soul, O Muhammad. He said: Praise be to the face of my Lord; so give me glad tidings, O Jibril. He said: You are the first intercessor and the first whose intercession is accepted on the Resurrection. He said: Praise be to the face of my Lord. Jibril said: O my beloved, about what are you asking me? He said: I ask you about my worry and my concern: who is for the reciters of the Quran after me? Who is for the fasting of the month of Ramadan after me? Who is for the pilgrims of the sacred House of Allah after me? Who is for my chosen nation after me? He said: Rejoice, O beloved of Allah, for Allah, mighty and majestic, says: Paradise has been forbidden to all prophets and nations until you and your nation enter it, O Muhammad. He said: Now my soul is content; then, O angel of death, proceed to what you were ordered. Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said: O Messenger of Allah, when you are taken, who will wash you? In what shall we shroud you? Who will pray over you? Who will enter the grave? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: O Ali, as for washing, you wash me, and al-Fadl b. Abbas will pour water upon you, and Jibril, peace be upon him, is your third; when you finish washing me, shroud me in three new garments, and Jibril, peace be upon him, will bring me embalming from Paradise; when you place me upon the bier, place me in the mosque and go out from me, for the first to pray over me is the Lord, mighty and majestic, from above His throne, then Jibril, peace be upon him, then Mika'il, then Israfil, peace be upon them both, then the angels in groups upon groups; then enter and stand in rows with none preceding over me. Fatimah, may Allah, most high, be pleased with her, said: Today is separation; when shall I meet you? He said to her: O my daughter, you will meet me on the Day of Resurrection at the Basin while I give drink to whoever comes to me at the Basin from my nation. She said: If I do not meet you, O Messenger of Allah? He said: You will meet me at the Scale while I intercede for my nation. She said: If I do not meet you, O Messenger of Allah? He said: You will meet me at the Bridge while I call: My Lord, save my nation from the Fire. So the angel of death, peace be upon him, drew near treating the taking of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him); when the soul reached the knees, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Oh. When the soul reached the navel, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called: O distress. Fatimah, peace be upon her, said: My distress, O my father. When the soul reached the collarbone, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called: O Jibril, how severe is the bitterness of death. So Jibril, peace be upon him, turned his face away from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: O Jibril, did you dislike looking at me? Jibril, peace be upon him, said: O my beloved, whose soul could bear to look at you while you treat the agonies of death? So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was taken; Ali b. Abi Talib washed him, Ibn Abbas poured water upon him, and Jibril, peace be upon him, was with them both; he was shrouded in three new garments and carried upon a bier. Then they brought him into the mosque, placed him in the mosque, and the people went out from him; the first to pray over him was the Lord, most high, from above His throne, then Jibril, then Mika'il, then Israfil, then the angels in groups upon groups. Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, said: We heard in the mosque a humming and did not see for them a person; we heard a caller calling and saying: Enter, may Allah have mercy on you, and pray over your Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). So we entered and stood in rows upon rows as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ordered us; we magnified with the magnification of Jibril, peace be upon him, and prayed over the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) with the prayer of Jibril, peace be upon him, with none of us preceding over the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). And Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, Ali b. Abi Talib and Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them, entered the grave, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was buried. When the people left, Fatimah said to Ali, may Allah be pleased with him: O Abu al-Hasan, did you bury the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)? He said: Yes. Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her, said: How could your souls bear to throw dust upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)? Was there no mercy for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in your breasts; was he not the teacher of good? He said: Yes, O Fatimah, but the decree of Allah which none repels. So she began weeping and lamenting, saying: O my father, now Jibril, peace be upon him, is cut off; and Jibril used to come to us with revelation from heaven.
