The long hadiths. The Islam of 'Adi ibn Hatim, kunya Abu Tarif, may Allah be pleased with him. 1 - Muhammad ibn Salih ibn al-Walid al-Narsi al-Basri narrated to us, he said: Yahya ibn Muhammad ibn al-Sakan narrated to us, he said: Ishaq ibn Idris al-Uswari narrated to us, he said: Salamah ibn 'Alqamah al-Mazini narrated to us, he said: Dawud ibn Abi Hind narrated to us, from 'Amir al-Sha'bi, from 'Adi ibn Hatim, he said: When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to Madinah and emigrated to it, he began dispatching raiding parties, and the camels of a people would ever be raided by his horsemen. When I saw that, I said: By Allah, if only I had left behind some of my camels so they would be near. By Allah, one day I was unaware when the camel-herder came running with his staff. I said: Woe to you, what is wrong with you? He said: By Allah, the livestock has been raided. I said: Who raided them? He said: The horsemen of Muhammad. I said to myself: This is what I feared. So I leapt to saddle my camels to escape with my family. I was a Christian, and I had a paternal aunt; I went in and said: What do you think should be done with her? I carried my wife, and my paternal aunt came to me and said: O 'Adi, do you not fear Allah, that you escape with your wife and leave your paternal aunt? I said: What could they do with her? A woman well past her prime. So I went on and did not turn to her until I reached Syria, ending up with Caesar, who was then at Hims. I said: I am a man of the Arabs and I am upon your religion, and this man keeps attacking us; flight to you was the way out. He said: Go and settle at such-and-such place until we see what to think of you. So I went and settled at the place he told me, and I stayed there a while. While I was there one day, I saw a woman in a howdah heading toward us until she reached our dwellings, and behold it was my paternal aunt. She said to me: O 'Adi, did you not fear Allah, that you escaped with your wife and left your paternal aunt? I said: That has happened; tell us what came after us. She said: After you left, the horsemen came to us and took us captive, and I was taken among the captives until I reached Madinah. We were at a side of the mosque when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed by us at midday with a man following behind him, 'Ali ibn Abi Talib. That man gestured to me to speak to him, so I called out to him: O Messenger of Allah, the child has perished and the delegate is absent, so bestow favor upon me, may Allah bestow upon you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "And who is your delegate?" I said: 'Adi ibn Hatim. He said: "The one who fled from Allah and His Messenger." Then he went on and did not turn to me until the next day, when he passed by me near that hour with that man behind him; he gestured to me to speak to him, so I called out: O Messenger of Allah, the child has perished and the delegate is absent, so bestow favor upon me, may Allah bestow upon you. He said: "And who is your delegate?" I said: 'Adi ibn Hatim al-Ta'i. He said: "The one who fled from Allah and His Messenger," and did not turn to me. On the third day, near that hour, he passed with that one behind him - meaning 'Ali - and he gestured to speak to him; I gestured with my hand that I had already spoken to him twice, but he gestured: speak to him again. So I called out: O Messenger of Allah, the child has perished and the delegate is absent, so bestow favor upon me, may Allah bestow upon you. He said: "And who is your delegate?" I said: 'Adi ibn Hatim. He said: "The one who fled from Allah and His Messenger." Then he said: "Go, for you are free for the sake of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic; when you find someone coming to your people, inform me and we shall carry you to your people." She said: So I set out and found a caravan of Tanukh carrying oil; they had sold their oil and were returning, so they mounted me on this camel and provisioned me. 'Adi said: Then my paternal aunt said to me: You are a foolish man; one of your people who is not your like has surpassed you in honor. Go to this man and take your share. I said: My paternal aunt has indeed advised me well. By Allah, if I go to this man and see what pleases me I shall take it, and if I see otherwise I shall return - and I was protective of my religion. So I came until I reached Madinah without protection, ending at the mosque, where I found a great circle, and I had never been among a people but I was recognized. When I reached the circle I greeted, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: "Who are you?" I said: I am 'Adi ibn Hatim al-Ta'i. The most beloved thing to him was that the nobles and chiefs of the Arabs should greet him with peace. He leapt from the circle, took my hand, and led me to his house. While he was walking with me, a woman called to him with a boy with her: O Messenger of Allah, we have a need of you. He stood apart with them at length until I felt pity for him from the long standing. I said to myself: I bear witness that you are free of my religion and the religion of al-Nu'man ibn al-Mundhir; had you been a king, no boy and woman would stand with him as long as I see. Then Allah cast love for him into my heart, until I reached his house. He threw to me a cushion stuffed with palm fiber; I sat on it and he sat on the ground. I said to myself: And this. Then he said to me: "Nothing has made you flee from the Muslims but that you heard them say: There is no god but Allah? And is there any god but Allah? And nothing has made you flee from the Muslims but that you heard them say: Allah is Greater? And do you know anything greater than Allah, the Mighty and Majestic?" He kept on until I accepted Islam, and Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, removed what was in my heart of love for Christianity. Then I asked: O Messenger of Allah, I am in a land of hunting, and one of us shoots game with his arrow and does not follow its trace for a day or two, then finds it dead with his arrow in it - may he eat it? He said: "Yes, if he wishes."
