Umayr ibn Sad al-Ansari, reports of Umayr ibn Sad: Muhammad ibn al-Rubal al-Adami al-Shirazi narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Hakim al-Shirazi narrated to us: Muhammad ibn Hakim al-Razi narrated to us: Abd al-Malik ibn Harun ibn Antarah narrated to us: My father narrated to me, from my grandfather, from Umayr ibn Sad, he said: Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, sent Umayr ibn Sad as governor over Hims, and he remained a year with no news reaching him. Then Umar said to his scribe: Write to Umayr; by Allah, I see him only as having betrayed us. When this letter of mine reaches you, come, and come with what you have collected of the Muslims when you look into this letter of mine. He said: So Umayr took his sack and placed therein his provision and his bowl, and hung his water skin, and took his staff. Then he came walking from Hims until he entered Madinah. He said: He arrived with his color pale, his face dusty, and his hair long. Then he entered upon Umar and said: Peace be upon you, O Commander of the Believers, and the mercy of Allah. Then Umar said: What is your affair? Then Umayr said: What do you see of my affair? Do you not see me sound of body, pure of blood, with the world dragging it by its horn? He said: And what is with you? And Umar thought he had brought wealth. Then he said: With me is my sack in which I place my provision, and my bowl in which I eat, and wash therein my head and my clothes; and my water skin in which I carry my ablution water and my drink; and my staff upon which I lean and strive thereby against an enemy if he confronts me. By Allah, the world is but a follower of my belongings. Umar said: So you came walking? He said: Yes. Umar said: Had you none to volunteer for you a mount to ride? He said: They did not, nor did I ask them that. He said: Evil are the Muslims you left. Then Umayr said to him: Fear Allah, O Umar, for Allah has forbidden you backbiting; I saw them praying the dawn prayer. He said: Then where is your share, and what did you do? Then he said: What is your question, O Commander of the Believers? Then Umar said: Glory be to Allah. Then Umayr said: Were I not afraid to grieve you, I would not inform you. You sent me until I reached the land, and I gathered the righteous of its people and entrusted them with collecting their fay. Then when they collected of them, I placed it in its places. And had any of it reached you, I would have brought it to you. He said: So you brought us nothing? He said: No. He said: Renew a covenant for Umayr. He said: That is something; I shall not work for you nor for anyone after you. By Allah, I was not safe; indeed I was not safe. Had I said to a Christian: May Allah disgrace you, this is what exposed me, O Umar. And my most wretched days are the day I allied with you, O Umar. Then he sought his permission, and he permitted him, and he returned to his house. He said: And between him and Madinah were miles. Then Umar said when Umayr departed: I see him only as having betrayed us. Then he sent a man called al-Harith, and gave him a hundred dinars, and said to him: Go until you alight with him as a guest; if you see trace of anything, come back, and if you see severe hardship, give him these hundred dinars. So al-Harith went, and there was Umayr sitting boiling his shirt beside the wall. Then the man greeted him, and Umayr said to him: Alight, may Allah have mercy on you. So he alighted, then he asked him and said: From where have you come? He said: From Madinah. He said: How did you leave the Commander of the Believers? He said: Well. He said: How did you leave the Muslims? He said: Well. He said: How did you leave the Commander of the Believers? He said: Well. He said: Does he not establish the prescribed punishments? He said: Yes; he struck a son of his who committed indecency, and he died of his beating. Then Umayr said: O Allah, aid Umar, for I know him only as intense in his love for You. He said: So he stayed three days, and they had only a loaf of barley which they singled him out with, going hungry, until hardship befell them. Then Umayr said to him: O man, you have made us hungry; if you see fit to move from us, do so. He said: Then he brought out the dinars and gave them to him. Then he said: The Commander of the Believers sent them to you, so seek help thereby. He said: Then he cried out and said: I have no need of them; return them. Then his wife said to him: If you need them, else place them in their places. Then Umayr said: By Allah, I have nothing to place them in. So his wife tore the lower part of her garment and gave him a rag, and he placed them therein. Then he went out and distributed them among the sons of martyrs and the poor. Then he returned, while the messenger thought he would give him something thereof. Then Umayr said to him: Convey from me greetings to the Commander of the Believers. Then al-Harith returned to Umar. Then he said: What did you see? He said: I saw, O Commander of the Believers, severe hardship. He said: Then what did he do with the dinars? He said: I do not know. He said: And Umar wrote to him: When this letter of mine reaches you, do not put it from your hand until you come. So he came to Umar and entered upon him. Then Umar said to him: What did you do with the dinars? He said: I did what I did; what is your question about them? He said: I adjure you to inform me what you did with them? He said: I sent them ahead for myself. He said: May Allah have mercy on you. Then he ordered a wasq of food and two garments. Then he said: As for the food, I have no need of it; I have left in the house two sa of barley; until I eat that, Allah will bring provision. And he did not take the food. And as for the two garments, he said: The wife of so-and-so is bare, so he took them and returned to his house. Then he did not remain but died, may Allah have mercy on him. Then that reached Umar, and it grieved him, and he asked mercy for him. Then he went out walking, with walkers with him, to Baqi al-Gharqad. Then he said to his companions: Let every man of you wish a wish. Then a man said: I wish, O Commander of the Believers, that I had wealth and would free so-and-so for the sake of Allah. And another said: I wish that I had wealth and would spend in the cause of Allah. And another said: I wish that I had strength and would draw with a bucket from Zamzam for the pilgrims of the House of Allah. Then Umar said: I wish that I had a man like Umayr to seek help with in the affairs of the Muslims.
