Abu Muslim narrated to us, saying: Ali ibn al-Madini narrated to us, saying: Man ibn Isa al-Qazzaz narrated to us, saying: Al-Harith ibn Abd al-Malik ibn Abdullah al-Laythi, then al-Sami al-Nakhai, narrated to us, from al-Qasim ibn Yazid ibn Abdullah ibn Qusayf, from his father, from Ata, from Ibn Abbas, from al-Fadl ibn Abbas who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to me, so I went out to him and found him feverish with his head bandaged. He said: Take my hand, O Fadl. So I took his hand until he reached the pulpit and sat upon it, then he said to me: Call out among the people. So I called out among the people, and they gathered to him. He praised Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and extolled Him, then said: O people, claims owed by me from among you have drawn near; whoever I have flogged on his back, here is my back, let him retaliate from it; and whoever I have insulted in his honor, here is my honor, let him retaliate from it; and whoever I have taken wealth from, here is my wealth, let him retaliate from it; and let no man say: I fear hatred from the Messenger of Allah; indeed hatred is not of my nature nor of my character; indeed the most beloved of you to me is he who takes a right if there is one, or absolves me, so that I meet Allah with a content soul; indeed I do not see that as availing me until I stand among you repeatedly. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) descended and prayed Zhuhr, then returned to the pulpit and repeated his statement about hatred and other matters, then said: O people, whoever has something with him, let him return it, and let him not say: the disgrace of this world; indeed the disgrace of this world is better than the disgrace of the Hereafter. Then a man stood up to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have three dirhams owed to me by you. He said: We neither belie a claimant nor make him swear an oath, so how did it come to be owed to you by me? He said: Do you remember the day a beggar passed by you and you commanded me, so I gave him three dirhams? He said: Give them to him, O Fadl. Then another man stood up to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, I have three dirhams which I misappropriated from the path of Allah. He said: And why did you misappropriate them? He said: I was in need of them. He said: Take them from him, O Fadl. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Whoever among you fears something, let him stand so I may supplicate for him. Then a man stood up to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, I am indeed a liar, and I am indeed a hypocrite, and I am indeed sleepy. He said: O Allah, grant him truthfulness and faith, and remove sleep from him when he intends. Then a man stood up to him and said: O Messenger of Allah, I am indeed a liar and I am indeed a hypocrite, and there is nothing of things except that I have committed it. So Umar said: Fellow, you have disgraced yourself. He said: Stop, O Ibn al-Khattab; the disgrace of this world is easier than the disgrace of the Hereafter; O Allah, grant him truthfulness and faith, and turn his affair to good. Then Umar spoke a word, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Umar is with me and I am with Umar, and the truth after me is with Umar wherever he is. This hadith is not narrated from al-Fadl except with this chain; al-Harith ibn Abd al-Malik was alone in transmitting it.
