Report of Abu Zurah ibn Amr ibn Jarir from Abu Dharr. 4025 - Narrated Yusuf ibn Musa, from Jarir, from Abu Farwah al-Hamdani, from Abu Zurah ibn Amr ibn Jarir, from Abu Dharr and Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with them), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to sit among his companions, and a stranger would come not knowing which of them he was. So we spoke to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about making for him something by which a stranger would recognize him when he came. So we built for him a bench of clay, and he used to sit upon it - I think he said - and we sat around him. While we sat with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in his gathering, a man approached, of the most handsome of people in face, the sweetest of people in scent, the cleanest of people in garment, as though his clothes had never been touched by dirt. He greeted from the edge of the mat and said: Peace be upon you, O Muhammad. He said: And upon you peace. He said: May I come near, O Muhammad? He said: Come near. He kept saying: May I come near, O Muhammad? And the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) kept saying to him, until he placed his hand upon the knee of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Then he said: O Muhammad, what is Islam? He said: To worship Allah and associate nothing with Him, to establish the prayer, to give the zakah, to perform pilgrimage to the House, and to fast Ramadan. He said: If I do this, have I submitted? He said: Yes. He said: You have spoken the truth. When we heard the man say to the Messenger of Allah: You have spoken the truth, we disapproved of it. Then he said: Tell me, what is faith? He said: Faith in Allah, the angels, the Book, the prophets, and belief in the decree, all of it. He said: If I do that, have I believed? He said: Yes. He said: You have spoken the truth. He said: O Muhammad, tell me, what is excellence? He said: To worship Allah as though you see Him, for if you do not see Him, He sees you. He said: You have spoken the truth. He said: Tell me, O Muhammad, when is the Hour? He did not answer him. Then he repeated, and he did not answer him again. Then he repeated, and he did not answer him. Then he raised his head and swore to him by Allah - or he said: By the One who sent Muhammad with guidance and the religion of truth, the one asked knows no more than the asker; but it has signs: when you see the herders of sheep competing in building, and see the barefoot naked as kings of the earth, and see a woman give birth to her mistress - among five none knows but Allah: Indeed Allah has knowledge of the Hour, sends down the rain, knows what is in the wombs; no soul knows what it shall earn tomorrow, and no soul knows in which land it shall die; indeed Allah is Knowing, Aware. Then he rose to the sky. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: By the One who sent Muhammad with guidance, I knew no more of him than any man among you; he was Jibril (peace be upon him), in the form of Dihyah al-Kalbi. Al-Bazzar said: We know of no narration of these words from Abu Dharr except through this channel with this chain, except a weak chain narrated by al-Sari ibn Ismail, in which he confused the chain. And this hadith, we know of no one who narrated it from Abu Farwah with this chain except Jarir.
