Musa ibn Abdullah al-Khuza'i narrated to us, he said: Bakr ibn Sulayman informed us, he said: Muhammad ibn Ishaq informed us. And Amr ibn Ali informed us, he said: Abdullah ibn Harun ibn Abi Isa informed us, from his father, from Ibn Ishaq, that he heard Asim ibn Umar ibn Qatada, from Mahmud ibn Labid, from Abdullah ibn Abbas, who said: Salman al-Farisi narrated to me his story from his own mouth. He said: I was a Persian man from the people of Asbahan, from a village of it called Jayy. My father was the headman of his village, and I was the dearest of Allah's creation to him; his love for me kept him confining me in his house as a slave girl is confined. I strove in Magianism until I became the keeper of the fire, kindling it and never letting it die down for an hour. My father had a great estate, and one day he was occupied, so he said to me: O my son, I am occupied today with my estate; go to it and inspect it. He commanded me concerning some of what he wanted in it. Then he said to me: Do not be detained from me, for if you are detained from me, you will be more important to me than my estate and will occupy me from everything. I went out intending his estate, traveling to it, and passed by a church of the Christians' churches. I heard their voices in it while they were praying, and I did not know people's affairs because of my father's confining me in his house. When I heard their voices, I entered upon them to see what they were doing. When I saw them, their prayer pleased me and I desired their matter, and I said: By Allah, this is better than the religion we are upon. I did not leave them until the sun set, and I neglected my father's estate. Then I said to them: Where is the origin of this religion? They said: A man in Syria. Then I returned to my father, who had sent seeking me and whom I had occupied from his work. He said: O my son, where were you? Did I not entrust to you what I entrusted? I said: I passed by people praying in a church of theirs, entered to them and remained with them while they prayed until the sun set. He said: O my son, there is no good in that religion; your religion and your fathers' religion is better than it. Then he confined me in his house. I sent to the Christians saying: When a caravan comes to you from Syria, inform me of them. A caravan of Syrian Christian merchants came to them, and they informed me of them. I said to them: When they finish their needs and intend to return to their land, let me know. When they intended to return to their land, they informed me, so I cast off the iron from my feet and went out with them until I reached Syria. When I reached it, I said: Who is the most knowledgeable of this religion? They said: The bishop in the church. I came to him and said: I have desired this religion, and I wish to be with you, serving you in your church, learning from you and praying with you. He said: Enter. I entered with him, and he was an evil man: he would command charity and urge them to it, but when they gathered something of it to him, he hoarded it for himself and gave no one anything, until he amassed jars of gold and silver. I hated him intensely for what I saw him doing. Then he died, and the Christians gathered to bury him. I said to them: This was an evil man; he commanded you with charity and urged you to it, but when you brought it to him, he hoarded it for himself and gave no one, or gave the poor nothing of it. They said: How do you know that? I said: I will show you his treasure. They said: Show us. I showed them, and they extracted gold and silver. When they saw it, they said: By Allah, you shall never bury him. So they crucified him, then stoned him. There was another man there, and they put him in his place. Salman says: I never saw a man who does not pray the five prayers better than him, more ascetic in this world, more desirous of the Hereafter, nor more diligent night and day than him. I loved him with a love I never loved anything before. I remained with him a time, then death came to him. I said to him: O so-and-so, I was with you and loved you with a love I never loved anything before you, and what you see of Allah's decree has come to you; to whom do you commend me, and what do you command me? He said: O my son, by Allah, I do not know anyone upon what I was upon; the people have perished, altered and abandoned much of what they were upon, except a man in Mosul, and he is so-and-so, and he is upon what I was upon; so join him. When he died and was buried, I joined the companion of Mosul. I said to him: O so-and-so, so-and-so commended me at his death to join you, and informed me that you are upon his matter. He said: Stay with me. I stayed with him and found him the best man upon his companion's matter. I had hardly stayed when he died. When death came to him, I said to him: O so-and-so, so-and-so commended me to you and commanded me to join you, and what you see of Allah's decree has come; to whom do you commend me, and what do you command me? He said: O my son, by Allah, I do not know a man upon the like of what we were upon except a man in Nasibin, and he is so-and-so; so join him. When he died and was buried, I joined the companion of Nasibin. I came to him and informed him of what his companion commanded me. He said: Stay with me. I stayed with him and found him upon the matter of his two companions; I stayed with the best man. By Allah, he had hardly remained when death descended upon him. When he was dying, I said to him: O so-and-so, so-and-so commended me to so-and-so, and so-and-so commended me to you; to whom do you commend me, and what do you command me? He said: O my son, I do not know anyone remaining upon what I command you to come to except a man in Ammuriya of the land of Rome, upon the like of what we are upon; he is upon our matter. When he died and was buried, I joined the companion of Ammuriya. I informed him of my story. He said: Stay with me. I stayed with the best man upon the guidance of his companions and their matter. I earned until I had some cows and a few sheep. Then Allah's decree descended upon him. When he was dying, I said to him: O so-and-so, I was with so-and-so, who commended me to so-and-so; then so-and-so commended to so-and-so; then so-and-so commended me to so-and-so; then so-and-so commended me to you; to whom do you commend me, and what do you command me? He said: By Allah, I do not know anyone more fit for you upon what we were upon among people for me to command you to come to; but the time of a prophet has cast its shadow over you: he is sent with the religion of Ibrahim, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him; he will emerge in the land of the Arabs, emigrating to a land between two lava tracts; he has signs that are not hidden: he eats gifts and does not eat charity; between his shoulders, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, is the seal of prophethood. If you can join that land, do so. Then he died and was buried. I remained in Ammuriya as long as Allah willed me to remain. Then some merchants of Kalb passed by me. I said to them: Will you carry me to the land of the Arabs, and I will give you these cows of mine and these sheep of mine? They said: Yes. I gave them and they carried me with them, until when they brought me to Wadi al-Qura, they wronged me and sold me to a Jewish man. I stayed with him and saw the palm trees, hoping it was the land my companion described to me, though it did not settle in my mind. While I was with him, a cousin of his from Banu Qurayza came to him and bought me from him, carrying me to Medina. By Allah, no sooner did I see it than I recognized it by my companion's description to me. I stayed there. Allah sent His Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and he stayed in Mecca as long as he stayed, and I heard no mention of him, busy as I was with slavery. Then he emigrated to Medina. By Allah, I was at the top of a date-palm cluster for my master, doing some work for him in it, with my master sitting beneath me, when a cousin of his came until he stood over him and said: May Allah fight Banu Qayla; by Allah, they are now gathered around a man who has come to them from Mecca today, claiming he is a prophet. When I heard it, joy seized me until I thought I would fall upon my master. I came down from the palm tree, saying to that cousin of his: What are you saying? What are you saying? My master became angry and struck me a severe blow, then said to me: What is it to you? Attend to your work. I said: Nothing; I only wanted to ask him about what he said. I had something I had gathered; in the evening I took it and went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while he was in Quba. I entered upon him and said to him: It has reached me that you are a righteous man, with companions of yours, strangers in need; and this is something I had as charity, and I saw you more deserving of it than others. I brought it near to him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to his companions: Eat. He himself refrained and did not eat of it. I said to myself: This is one. Then I left him, gathered something, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) moved to Medina. Then I brought it to him and said to him: I saw you do not eat charity, and this is a gift with which I honor you. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) ate of it and commanded his companions, so they ate. I said to myself: These are two. Then I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) while he was in Baqi al-Gharqad, having followed the funeral of a man of his companions, sitting. I greeted him, then went behind to look at his back whether I could see the seal my companion described to me. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw me going behind him, he knew I was verifying something described to me, so he cast his cloak from his back. I looked at the seal and recognized it. I fell upon him kissing him and weeping. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Turn around. I turned and sat before him. I narrated to him my story as I narrated to you, O Ibn Abbas. It pleased the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) that his companions hear that. Then slavery occupied Salman until he missed with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) Badr and Uhud. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Write a contract, O Salman. I contracted with my master for three hundred palm trees which I would plant for him, and forty ounces. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to his companions: Help your brother. They helped me with the palms: a man with thirty, a man with twenty, a man with fifteen, a man with ten, and a man according to what he had, until three hundred were gathered for me. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: Go, O Salman, and when you finish, let me know; I will be with you, placing them with my hand. I dug holes for them, and my companions helped me, until when I finished, I came to him and informed him. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out with me to them, and we brought the young palms near to him while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) placed them with his hand until we finished. By the One in Whose hand is the soul of Salman, not a single palm tree of them died. I delivered the palms, and the money remained upon me. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was brought something like a hen's egg of gold from one of the mines. He said: What has the Persian contract-slave done? I was called to him. He said: Take this and pay with it what is upon you, O Salman. I said: And where will this fall, O Messenger of Allah, against what is upon me? He said: Take it, for Allah will pay it off for you. I weighed out to him from it, by the One in Whose hand is the soul of Salman, forty ounces; I paid them their due. Salman was freed. I witnessed with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) al-Khandaq, then no battle with him escaped me.
