Umm Sulaym رضي الله عنها, mother of Anas ibn Malik رضي الله عنه, reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave detailed instructions for washing a deceased woman: beginning with the belly with gentle wiping if she is not pregnant and not moving her if pregnant; beginning the washing with the lower part while a covering cloth veils her nakedness; washing with cotton and washing well, then inserting the hand beneath the cloth and wiping thrice with cotton before ablution; performing ablution with water containing lote leaves while another standing woman pours and does nothing else until purification, with the nearest kin undertaking it or otherwise a pious Muslim woman, assisted by another if small or weak; washing the lower part cleanly with lote and water, then ablution as for prayer; then three washings with water and lote beginning with the head and cleansing it of lote with water without combing with a comb; increasing to five if impurity recurs after three, and to seven if after five, all in odd numbers with water and lote, with some camphor and lote in the third or fifth, placed in a new jar; then seating her and pouring from head to feet, covering with a clean cloth, removing the soiled covering from behind it, stuffing the lower part with as much cotton as possible; binding a long washed loincloth upon her buttocks as a waist-wrapper is tied, knotting it between her thighs, joining the thighs and drawing its end toward the knees; then perfuming and shrouding her, braiding her hair into three plaits of forelock and two braids without imitating men; shrouding in five garments including an izar wrapping the thighs; removing nothing of her hair by depilatory or otherwise, washing what falls and inserting it into the head hair, perfuming the head hair well, not washing with heated water, perfuming her and the shroud with seven sprinklings in odd numbers if wished, and likewise in odd if veiling her in her bier; and if she is confined or nursed in illness or the like, washing with a single rag following each part with water without moving her, out of fear that something may issue that cannot be returned. > **"When a woman dies and they wish to wash her, let them begin with her belly; let her belly be wiped gently if she is not pregnant, and if she is pregnant do not move her. If you wish to wash her, begin with her lower part and cast a veiling cloth over her nakedness. Then take cotton and wash her and wash her well. Then insert your hand beneath the cloth and wipe her with cotton three times, and wipe her well before you perform ablution for her. Then perform ablution for her with water containing lote leaves, and let a woman pour the water while standing, undertaking nothing else until she is cleansed with lote while you wash. Let the most entitled among people undertake her washing, otherwise a pious Muslim woman; and if she is small or weak, let another pious Muslim woman attend her. When you finish washing her lower part with a cleansing wash of lote and water, then perform ablution for her as for prayer; this is the exposition of her ablution. Then wash her after that three times with water and lote, beginning with her head before all else, and cleanse its washing of lote with water, and do not comb her head with a comb. If impurity issues after the three washings, make them five; and if it issues in the fifth, make them seven, and let all of that be odd with water and lote. And in the fifth or the third, put therein some camphor and some lote. Then place that in a new jar. Then seat her and pour over her, beginning with her head until you reach her feet. When you finish with her, cast a clean cloth over her, then insert your hand behind the cloth and remove it from her. Then stuff her lower part with cotton as much as you can. Then take a long washed loincloth and bind it upon her buttocks and tie it between her thighs and join her thighs, then cast its end toward her knees. This is the affair of her lower part. Then perfume her and shroud her, and braid her hair into three plaits: a forelock and two braids, and do not liken her to men. Let her shroud be in five garments, one of them an izar with which you wrap her thighs. Remove nothing of her hair with depilatory or otherwise, and whatever falls of her hair, wash it then insert it into the hair of her head, and perfume the hair of her head and perfume it well. Do not wash her with heated water. Perfume her and what you shroud her with, with seven sprinklings if you wish, and make everything thereof odd. And if it occurs to you to veil her in her bier, make it odd. This is the affair of her shroud and her head. And if she is confined or nursed in illness or the like, take a single rag and wash her with water, following each part of her, and do not move her, for I fear something may issue from her that cannot be returned."**
