Unays ibn Junadah al-Ghifari, the brother of Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him). Abu Abd al-Malik Ahmad ibn Ibrahim al-Qurashi narrated to us: Muhammad ibn A'idh narrated to us: al-Walid ibn Muslim narrated to us: Abu Tarfah Abbad ibn al-Rayyan al-Lakhmi narrated to us, saying: I heard Urwah ibn Ruwaym al-Lakhmi say: Amir ibn Ludayn, the judge of the people under Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, narrated to me, saying: I heard Abu Layla al-Ash'ari say: Abu Dharr narrated to me, saying: The first thing that called me to Islam was that we were Bedouin people struck by a year of drought. So I carried my mother and my brother - whose name was Unays - to in-laws of ours in upper Najd. When we alighted with them, they honored us. When a man of the tribe saw that, he went to my maternal uncle and said: Do you know that Unays visits your wife in your absence? It sank into his heart. I returned from pasturing my camels and found him gloomy, weeping. I said: Why are you weeping, O uncle? He told me the news. I said: Allah forbid that; we detest indecency, even if hard times have befallen us. You have spoiled for us the good cheer with which you received us, and there is no way to stay together. So I carried my mother and my brother until we alighted near Makkah. My brother said: I am going to contend in verse with a poet. I said: Do not do it. But contentiousness drove him until he vied with Durayd ibn al-Simmah, his flock against his flock. By Allah, Durayd that day was more poetic than my brother. They sought judgment from al-Khansa, and she preferred my brother over Durayd - that was because Durayd had proposed to her through her father, and she said: He is an old man; I have no need of him - so she held that against him. So we joined his flock to ours, and we had a large herd. He said: Then I came to Makkah and began at al-Safa, where there were men of Quraysh. It had reached me that among them was a Sabian, or a madman, or a poet, or a sorcerer. I said: Where is this one you speak of? They said: There he is, where you see. I turned toward him, and by Allah, I had not gone past them the throw of a stone before they pelted me with every bone, stone, and clod, and covered me in my own blood. I came to the House and entered between the curtains and the structure, and fasted there for thirty days, neither eating nor drinking except from the water of Zamzam, until on a bright moonlit night two women of Khuza'ah came and circumambulated the House, then mentioned Isaf and Na'ilah - two idols they used to worship. I stuck my head out from under the curtains and said: Put one of them upon the other. They became angry, then said: By Allah, if our men were present, you would not have said this. Then they turned away. I went out following their tracks until they met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He said: Who are you two, and from where are you, and from where have you come, and what has brought you? They told him the news. He said: Where did you leave the Sabian? They said: We left him between the curtains and the structure. He said to them: Did he say anything to you? They said: Yes, a word that fills the mouth. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) smiled. Then they slipped away, and I came to where the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was, and greeted him then. He said: Who are you, and from whom are you, and from where are you, and from where have you come, and what has brought you? I began to tell him the news. He said: From where did you eat and drink? I said: From the water of Zamzam. He said: It is indeed nourishing food. With him was Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: O Messenger of Allah, permit me to give him supper. He said: Yes. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) went out walking, and Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) took my hand until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stopped at the door of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Abu Bakr entered his house, and raisins of Ta'if were brought, and he kept throwing them to us handful by handful, and we ate of them until we were full. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me: O Abu Dharr. I said: At your service. He said: A land has been shown to me, a land with water - I think it is none but Tihamah. So go out to your people and call them to what you have entered into. He said: So I went out until I came to my mother and my brother and told them the news. They said: We have no aversion to the religion you have entered into - and they accepted Islam. Then we went out until we came to Madinah, and I informed my people. They said: We believe you, but let us meet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). When we came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and met him, Ghifar said: O Messenger of Allah, Abu Dharr told us what you told him, and we have accepted Islam and testify that you are the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Then Aslam and Khuza'ah came forward and said: O Messenger of Allah, we desire and have entered into what our brothers and allies have entered into. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Aslam - may Allah grant them safety - and Ghifar - may Allah forgive them. Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) took my hand and said: O Abu Dharr. I said: At your service, O Abu Bakr. He said: Did you used to worship in your pre-Islamic days? I said: Yes; you would have seen me standing at the sun, remaining in prayer until its heat hurt me, then falling as though I were a hidden shelter. He said to me: In which direction did you face? I said: I do not know, except where Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) directed me, until Allah brought Islam to me.
