Khalid ibn Ararah from Ali, upon him be peace - 438 - It was read to Abu Ahmad Abd al-Baqi ibn Abd al-Jabbar al-Harawi, while we listened: Abu Shuja Umar ibn Muhammad ibn Abd Allah al-Bistami informed you, by reading to him while you listened: Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Khalili informed us, Ali ibn Ahmad al-Khuzai informed us, al-Haytham ibn Kulayb al-Shashi informed us, Ismail al-Qadi narrated to us, Hajjaj ibn Minhal narrated to us, Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us, from Simak ibn Harb, from Khalid ibn Ararah, he said: When Uthman was killed, I was seized with severe fright, and drawing the sword among us was grave, so I sat in my house. I had a need in the market for clothes I bought, so I went out, and there was a group sitting in shade, about forty men, with a chain hung displayed upon the door. I said: I shall enter and look. He said: I went to enter, and the doorman prevented me; they said: Leave the man. So I entered, and there were the nobles of people, with a cushion displayed, so I sat. A handsome man came wearing a suit without shirt or turban, and he was Ali, may Allah be pleased with him. Then he sat, recognizing none of the people but me, saying: Ask me, and ask me only about what benefits and harms. A man said: Since you spoke until you loved to speak, I ask you. He said: Ask, and ask only about what benefits or harms. He said: What are: By those scattering broadcast, by those bearing weight, by those running ease, by those distributing command? The angels. Then he said: Tell me about what I ask you. He said: Ask, and ask only about what benefits or harms. He said: What is: By the raised roof? He said: The heaven. He said: What is: By the storming winds? He said: The winds. He said: What is: The retreating stars? He said: The planets. He said: What is: By the frequented House? Ali said to his companions: What do you say? They said: We say: It is the Sacred House. He said: Rather it is a house in heaven called al-Surah, opposite this House; its sanctity in heaven is as this one's sanctity on earth. Seventy thousand angels enter it daily, then never return to it. Then he recited this verse: The first House established for mankind is that at Bakkah, blessed and guidance for worlds; therein are clear signs, the station of Ibrahim; whoever enters it is safe. Then he said: Yet it is not the first house that was; Nuh was before it, among houses; Ibrahim was before it and among houses; but it is the first house established for people with blessing therein. Therein are clear signs, the station of Ibrahim; whoever enters it is safe. Then he narrated that Ibrahim, upon him be peace, when commanded to build the House, was constrained and did not know how to build it, so Allah sent al-Sakinah, a swift wind with a head, which encircled for him the Hajj; he would build upon it a course daily. Makkah is intensely hot. When he reached the Stone, he said to Ismail: Go seek for me a stone to place. He went roaming the mountains, and Jibril came with the Stone and placed it. Ismail came, saying: From where is this? He said: Brought by one who did not rely upon my building and yours, so he placed it. It remained as Allah willed, then collapsed; the Amalekites built it, then collapsed; Jurhum built it, then collapsed; Quraysh built it. When they wanted to place the Stone, they disputed its placing. They said: The first to emerge from this door shall place it. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) emerged from the door of Banu Shaybah; he ordered a garment spread, placed the Stone in the middle of the garment, and ordered from each thigh a man to take a side of the garment. They took it and lifted it, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) took it and placed it. A different man stood, saying: Tell me about this verse: If a woman fears from her husband ill-conduct or aversion, there is no sin upon them, until he completed the verse. He said: Ask about the like of this; this is knowledge. It is a man with two wives, one aged and unattractive, whom he reconciles to visit every day, three, or four. Another man stood to him asking about this verse: They ask you about women; say: Allah gives you verdict about them. Prayer was established and he stood. Qutaybah narrated from Abu Awanah, from Simak, from Khalid ibn Ararah, he said: I heard Ali, a man asking him about: By those scattering, by those bearing weight, by those distributing.
