Narration of Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, may Allah be pleased with him, from Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him. 12. Abu al-Fakhr Asad ibn Said ibn Mahmud al-Isbahani informed us, by reading while we listened, in Isfahan, it was said to him: Fatima bint Abd Allah al-Jawzdaniyya informed you, by reading upon her while you listened: Muhammad ibn Abd Allah ibn Zayd informed us; Abu al-Qasim Sulayman ibn Ahmad al-Tabarani informed us; Abu al-Zinba Rawh ibn al-Faraj al-Misri narrated to us; Said ibn Ufayr narrated to us; Ulwan ibn Dawud al-Bajali narrated to me, from Humayd ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Humayd ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Awf, from Salih ibn Kaysan, from Humayd ibn Abd al-Rahman, from his father, who said: I entered upon Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him, visiting him in the illness in which he died. I greeted him and asked him: How have you woken? He sat upright. I said: By Allah's praise you have woken recovered. He said: I am, as you see, in pain, and you have given me occupation along with my pain. I made for you a covenant after me, and I chose for you the best of you in my view, yet each of you has swelled his nose for it, hoping the matter would be his. I saw the world approaching, though it has not yet approached, and it is coming. You will furnish your houses with curtains of silk and cushions of brocade, and you will find painful the beds of soft Adhri wool, as if one of you were upon the thorns of sadan. By Allah, for one of you to be brought forward and his neck struck without legal punishment is better for him than to swim in the flood of the world. Then he said: I grieve over nothing except three things I did, which I wish I had not done; three things I did not do, which I wish I had done; and three things I wish I had asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about. As for the three I wish I had not done: I wish I had not uncovered the house of Fatima, or left it, and had closed war upon myself; I wish that on the day of the Saqifa of Banu Saida I had cast the matter upon the neck of one of the two men, Abu Ubayda or Umar, so he would be the Commander of the Faithful and I a minister; and I wish that when I directed Khalid ibn al-Walid to the people of apostasy, I had stayed at Dhu al-Qassa: if the Muslims triumphed, they triumphed, otherwise I would have been a support and reinforcement. As for those I wish I had done: I wish that on the day al-Ashath was brought to me as a captive I had struck his neck, for it seems to me no evil occurs except he flies to it; I wish that on the day al-Fujaa al-Sulami was brought to me I had not burned him, but killed him swiftly or released him safely; and I wish that when I directed Khalid ibn al-Walid to Syria, I had directed Umar to Iraq, so I would have extended my hands, my right and my left, in the path of Allah, mighty and majestic. As for the three I wish I had asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) about: I wish I had asked him in whom this authority lies, so its people would not be disputed; I wish I had asked him whether the Ansar have any share in this matter; and I wish I had asked him about the paternal aunt and the brother's daughter, for in my mind concerning them is a need. The Imam Abu al-Hasan al-Daraqutni mentioned this narration and said: Al-Layth ibn Sad opposed him, narrating it from Ulwan, from Salih ibn Kaysan with this chain, except that he did not mention Humayd ibn Abd al-Rahman between Ulwan and Salih. It resembles that Said ibn Ufayr preserved it from Ulwan, for he added a man in it, and Said ibn Ufayr was among the preserving trustworthy. I say: This is a hasan hadith from Abu Bakr, except that there is nothing in it of the speech of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Al-Bukhari narrated in his book more than one saying of the Companions, among them what Tariq narrated.
