سُورَةُ النِّسَاءِ
Reading Adwa' al-Bayan by Muhammad al-Amin al-Shinqiti
Ayahs 151–160 of 176
أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلْكَٰفِرُونَ حَقًّۭا ۚ وَأَعْتَدْنَا لِلْكَٰفِرِينَ عَذَابًۭا مُّهِينًۭا
Those are the disbelievers, truly. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.
Explained together with ayah 145
وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ بِٱللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِۦ وَلَمْ يُفَرِّقُوا۟ بَيْنَ أَحَدٍۢ مِّنْهُمْ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ سَوْفَ يُؤْتِيهِمْ أُجُورَهُمْ ۗ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ غَفُورًۭا رَّحِيمًۭا
But they who believe in Allah and His messengers and do not discriminate between any of them - to those He is going to give their rewards. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.

يَسْـَٔلُكَ أَهْلُ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ أَن تُنَزِّلَ عَلَيْهِمْ كِتَٰبًۭا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ ۚ فَقَدْ سَأَلُوا۟ مُوسَىٰٓ أَكْبَرَ مِن ذَٰلِكَ فَقَالُوٓا۟ أَرِنَا ٱللَّهَ جَهْرَةًۭ فَأَخَذَتْهُمُ ٱلصَّٰعِقَةُ بِظُلْمِهِمْ ۚ ثُمَّ ٱتَّخَذُوا۟ ٱلْعِجْلَ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا جَآءَتْهُمُ ٱلْبَيِّنَٰتُ فَعَفَوْنَا عَن ذَٰلِكَ ۚ وَءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَىٰ سُلْطَٰنًۭا مُّبِينًۭا
The People of the Scripture ask you to bring down to them a book from the heaven. But they had asked of Moses [even] greater than that and said, "Show us Allah outright," so the thunderbolt struck them for their wrongdoing. Then they took the calf [for worship] after clear evidences had come to them, and We pardoned that. And We gave Moses a clear authority.
قَوْلُهُ تَعالى: ﴿ثُمَّ اتَّخَذُوا العِجْلَ مِن بَعْدِ ما جاءَتْهُمُ البَيِّناتُ فَعَفَوْنا عَنْ ذَلِكَ﴾ الآيَةَ، لَمْ يُبَيِّنْ هُنا سَبَبَ عَفْوِهِ عَنْهم ذَنْبَ اتِّخاذِ العِجْلِ إلَهًا، ولَكِنَّهُ بَيَّنَهُ في سُورَةِ ”البَقَرَةِ“ بِقَوْلِهِ: ﴿فَتُوبُوا إلى بارِئِكم فاقْتُلُوا أنْفُسَكم ذَلِكم خَيْرٌ لَكم عِنْدَ بارِئِكم فَتابَ عَلَيْكم إنَّهُ هو التَّوّابُ الرَّحِيمُ﴾ [البقرة: ٥٤] .
وَرَفَعْنَا فَوْقَهُمُ ٱلطُّورَ بِمِيثَٰقِهِمْ وَقُلْنَا لَهُمُ ٱدْخُلُوا۟ ٱلْبَابَ سُجَّدًۭا وَقُلْنَا لَهُمْ لَا تَعْدُوا۟ فِى ٱلسَّبْتِ وَأَخَذْنَا مِنْهُم مِّيثَٰقًا غَلِيظًۭا
And We raised over them the mount for [refusal of] their covenant; and We said to them, "Enter the gate bowing humbly", and We said to them, "Do not transgress on the sabbath", and We took from them a solemn covenant.
قَوْلُهُ تَعالى: ﴿وَقُلْنا لَهم لا تَعْدُوا في السَّبْتِ﴾ الآيَةَ، لَمْ يُبَيِّنْ هُنا هَلِ امْتَثَلُوا هَذا الأمْرَ، فَتَرَكُوا العُدْوانَ في السَّبْتِ أوْ لا، ولَكِنَّهُ بَيَّنَ في مَواضِعَ أُخَرَ أنَّهم لَمْ يَمْتَثِلُوا وأنَّهُمُ اعْتَدَوْا في السَّبْتِ، كَقَوْلِهِ تَعالى: ﴿وَلَقَدْ عَلِمْتُمُ الَّذِينَ اعْتَدَوْا مِنكم في السَّبْتِ﴾ الآيَةَ [البقرة: ٦٥]، وقَوْلِهِ: ﴿واسْألْهم عَنِ القَرْيَةِ الَّتِي كانَتْ حاضِرَةَ البَحْرِ إذْ يَعْدُونَ في السَّبْتِ﴾ الآيَةَ [الأعراف: ١٦٣] .
فَبِمَا نَقْضِهِم مِّيثَٰقَهُمْ وَكُفْرِهِم بِـَٔايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ وَقَتْلِهِمُ ٱلْأَنۢبِيَآءَ بِغَيْرِ حَقٍّۢ وَقَوْلِهِمْ قُلُوبُنَا غُلْفٌۢ ۚ بَلْ طَبَعَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْهَا بِكُفْرِهِمْ فَلَا يُؤْمِنُونَ إِلَّا قَلِيلًۭا
And [We cursed them] for their breaking of the covenant and their disbelief in the signs of Allah and their killing of the prophets without right and their saying, "Our hearts are wrapped". Rather, Allah has sealed them because of their disbelief, so they believe not, except for a few.
Explained together with ayah 154
وَبِكُفْرِهِمْ وَقَوْلِهِمْ عَلَىٰ مَرْيَمَ بُهْتَٰنًا عَظِيمًۭا
And [We cursed them] for their disbelief and their saying against Mary a great slander,
قَوْلُهُ تَعالى: ﴿وَبِكُفْرِهِمْ وقَوْلِهِمْ عَلى مَرْيَمَ بُهْتانًا عَظِيمًا﴾، لَمْ يُبَيِّنْ هُنا هَذا البُهْتانَ العَظِيمَ الَّذِي قالُوهُ عَلى الصِّدِّيقَةِ مَرْيَمَ العَذْراءِ، ولَكِنَّهُ أشارَ في مَوْضِعٍ آخَرَ إلى أنَّهُ رَمْيُهم لَها بِالفاحِشَةِ، وأنَّها جاءَتْ بِوَلَدٍ لِغَيْرِ رِشْدَةٍ في زَعْمِهِمُ الباطِلِ لَعَنَهُمُ اللَّهُ وذَلِكَ في قَوْلِهِ: ﴿فَأتَتْ بِهِ قَوْمَها تَحْمِلُهُ قالُوا يامَرْيَمُ لَقَدْ جِئْتِ شَيْئًا فَرِيًّا﴾ [مريم: ٢٧]، يَعْنُونَ ارْتِكابَ الفاحِشَةِ، ﴿ياأُخْتَ هارُونَ ما كانَ أبُوكِ امْرَأ سَوْءٍ وما كانَتْ أُمُّكِ بَغِيًّا﴾ [مريم: ٢٨]، أيْ: زانِيَةً، فَكَيْفَ تَفْجُرِينَ ووالِداكِ لَيْسا كَذَلِكَ، وفي القِصَّةِ أنَّهم رَمَوْها بِيُوسُفَ النَّجّارِ وكانَ مِنَ الصّالِحِينَ، والبُهْتانُ أشَدُّ الكَذِبِ الَّذِي يُتَعَجَّبُ مِنهُ.
وَقَوْلِهِمْ إِنَّا قَتَلْنَا ٱلْمَسِيحَ عِيسَى ٱبْنَ مَرْيَمَ رَسُولَ ٱللَّهِ وَمَا قَتَلُوهُ وَمَا صَلَبُوهُ وَلَٰكِن شُبِّهَ لَهُمْ ۚ وَإِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱخْتَلَفُوا۟ فِيهِ لَفِى شَكٍّۢ مِّنْهُ ۚ مَا لَهُم بِهِۦ مِنْ عِلْمٍ إِلَّا ٱتِّبَاعَ ٱلظَّنِّ ۚ وَمَا قَتَلُوهُ يَقِينًۢا
And [for] their saying, "Indeed, we have killed the Messiah, Jesus, the son of Mary, the messenger of Allah." And they did not kill him, nor did they crucify him; but [another] was made to resemble him to them. And indeed, those who differ over it are in doubt about it. They have no knowledge of it except the following of assumption. And they did not kill him, for certain.

بَل رَّفَعَهُ ٱللَّهُ إِلَيْهِ ۚ وَكَانَ ٱللَّهُ عَزِيزًا حَكِيمًۭا
Rather, Allah raised him to Himself. And ever is Allah Exalted in Might and Wise.
Explained together with ayah 156
وَإِن مِّنْ أَهْلِ ٱلْكِتَٰبِ إِلَّا لَيُؤْمِنَنَّ بِهِۦ قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِۦ ۖ وَيَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ يَكُونُ عَلَيْهِمْ شَهِيدًۭا
And there is none from the People of the Scripture but that he will surely believe in Jesus before his death. And on the Day of Resurrection he will be against them a witness.

فَبِظُلْمٍۢ مِّنَ ٱلَّذِينَ هَادُوا۟ حَرَّمْنَا عَلَيْهِمْ طَيِّبَٰتٍ أُحِلَّتْ لَهُمْ وَبِصَدِّهِمْ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ كَثِيرًۭا
For wrongdoing on the part of the Jews, We made unlawful for them [certain] good foods which had been lawful to them, and for their averting from the way of Allah many [people],
قَوْلُهُ تَعالى: ﴿فَبِظُلْمٍ مِنَ الَّذِينَ هادُوا حَرَّمْنا عَلَيْهِمْ طَيِّباتٍ أُحِلَّتْ لَهُمْ﴾ الآيَةَ، لَمْ يُبَيِّنْ هُنا ما هَذِهِ الطَّيِّباتِ الَّتِي حَرَّمَها عَلَيْهِمْ بِسَبَبِ ظُلْمِهِمْ، ولَكِنَّهُ بَيَّنَها في سُورَةِ ”الأنْعامِ“ بِقَوْلِهِ: ﴿وَعَلى الَّذِينَ هادُوا حَرَّمْنا كُلَّ ذِي ظُفُرٍ ومِنَ البَقَرِ والغَنَمِ حَرَّمْنا عَلَيْهِمْ شُحُومَهُما إلّا ما حَمَلَتْ ظُهُورُهُما أوِ الحَوايا أوْ ما اخْتَلَطَ بِعَظْمٍ ذَلِكَ جَزَيْناهم بِبَغْيِهِمْ وإنّا لَصادِقُونَ﴾ [الأنعام: ١٤٦] .
