About this book

Compiled by Imam Ali ibn Umar al-Daraqutni

Sunan al-Daraqutni is the enduring legacy of Imam Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Umar al-Daraqutni al-Baghdadi (306-385 AH / 918-995 CE), born in the Dar al-Qutn quarter of Baghdad from which he took his name. Raised in a household devoted to hadith transmission, he became one of the most formidable critics of his age, travelling through Iraq, Syria, and Egypt to gather narrations and scrutinize their chains. He is celebrated above all for his unrivaled mastery of ilal, the science of detecting hidden and subtle defects buried within seemingly sound chains of transmission, a discipline he elevated to unprecedented depth in his separate multi-volume masterwork al-Ilal. In his Sunan, comprising roughly 4,859 reports arranged according to the chapters of jurisprudence, al-Daraqutni set out to gather the variant routes (turuq) through which each hadith was transmitted, juxtaposing them so that scholars could weigh their relative strength and detect inconsistencies. He wove his own critical remarks on narrators and concealed flaws directly into the text, offering both authentic and disputed material as evidentiary support for juristic argumentation. For this reason, the Sunan has long been prized by jurists and hadith specialists alike as an indispensable evidentiary reservoir, one that preserves debated and weaker narrations often absent from the stricter canonical collections, alongside the penetrating commentary of one of Islam's foremost authorities on hadith criticism.
