About this book

Compiled by Imam Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi

Riyad al-Salihin min Kalam Sayyid al-Mursalin ("The Meadows of the Righteous from the Words of the Master of the Messengers") was compiled by Imam Abu Zakariyya Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi (631-676 AH / 1233-1277 CE), the Damascene Shafi'i jurist and hadith master also famed for his Forty Hadith. It stands among the most widely read thematic hadith collections in the Sunni world, gathering roughly 1,896 to 1,900 narrations drawn chiefly from the Six Books, with Nawawi carefully citing the source of each hadith and at times noting the authenticity of weaker reports. Its distinguishing feature is structural: the approximately 372 chapters, grouped into some 19-20 books, regularly open with relevant Quranic verses before presenting the supporting hadith, binding scripture and prophetic tradition into a single devotional current. The content spans sincerity of intention, repentance, patience, piety, remembrance of Allah, supplication, etiquette in eating, dress, sleep, travel, greetings, visiting the sick, knowledge, virtues, prohibited matters, and preparation for the Hereafter. Rather than pursuing legal argumentation, Nawawi selected material for its direct impact on the heart and daily conduct, making the work practical and accessible rather than academic. This accessibility explains its extraordinary and enduring popularity: it is taught in mosques, madrasas, and study circles worldwide, quoted regularly in sermons, and read within families for personal reform, serving for centuries as one of the most common entry points into the study of hadith for Muslims of every level of learning.
