About this book

Compiled by Imam Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani

Bulugh al-Maram min Adillat al-Ahkam ("Attainment of the Objective from the Evidences of the Rulings") is the celebrated hadith compendium of Imam al-Hafiz Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Hajar al-Asqalani (773-852 AH / 1372-1449 CE), the foremost hadith master of his generation and long-serving chief judge of Egypt, best known for Fath al-Bari, his monumental commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari. Unlike that vast work, Bulugh al-Maram was designed as a concise, purpose-built manual: it gathers roughly 1,358 hadith selected specifically because they function as legal evidence (adillat al-ahkam) for the rulings of Islamic jurisprudence, rather than as a general hadith anthology. Ibn Hajar arranged the material according to the standard chapters of fiqh, beginning with purification and prayer and proceeding through zakat, fasting, hajj, commercial transactions, marriage, criminal law, and other subjects, drawing on the Six Books, Musnad Ahmad, and numerous other collections, and noting after each hadith its source and, where relevant, its authenticity. Its deliberately selective, evidentiary focus and economical wording made it an ideal bridge between raw hadith study and applied legal reasoning, and it has consequently become one of the most widely memorized and taught texts in Islamic seminaries across the world, forming the basis of countless commentaries, including one begun by Ibn Hajar himself, and remaining an indispensable primer for students approaching fiqh through the lens of hadith.
