About this book
Compiled by Imam Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi
Al-Arba'in al-Nawawiyyah, "Nawawi's Forty Hadith," is the most widely memorized and taught hadith compilation in Islamic history, authored by Imam Abu Zakariyya Yahya ibn Sharaf al-Nawawi (631-676 AH / 1233-1277 CE), born in the village of Nawa near Damascus. A towering Shafi'i jurist and master of hadith sciences, he served as head of the Ashrafiyya Dar al-Hadith in Damascus and, despite dying at forty-five, produced enduring works including Riyad al-Salihin and his celebrated commentary on Sahih Muslim. The arba'in genre, collections of forty hadith on core religious themes, was already well established among earlier scholars, but Nawawi's selection became the most influential of all. He gathered hadith recognized as jawami' al-kalim, concise sayings of the Prophet that condense vast principles of faith, worship, and ethics into a few words, drawing chiefly from Bukhari and Muslim. Though he aimed for exactly forty, tradition preserves forty-two, and later scholars, most notably Ibn Rajab al-Hanbali in Jami' al-Ulum wa al-Hikam, added further hadith and produced extensive commentaries explaining their legal, spiritual, and doctrinal dimensions. Ibn Daqiq al-Id's commentary is likewise foundational. Centuries later, the collection remains the first substantial hadith text memorized by students across the Muslim world, prized for compressing the essentials of Islamic belief and practice into a single accessible primer.
