145 - Imam Abu Bakr al-Qasim ibn 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar ibn Ahmad al-Saffar in Naysabur informed us that Abu Bakr Wajih ibn Tahir al-Shahhami informed them, Abu Hamid Ahmad ibn al-Hasan al-Azhari informed us, saying: Abu Sa'id Muhammad ibn 'Abdullah ibn Hamdun informed us, Abu Hamid Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn al-Hasan ibn al-Sharqi informed us, Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn 'Abdullah ibn Khalid ibn Faris ibn Dhu'ayb al-Dhuhli narrated to us, Yusuf ibn al-Buhlul narrated to us, Ibn Idris narrated to us, from Ibn Ishaq who said: And al-Zuhri said: 'Ubaydullah ibn 'Abdullah ibn 'Utbah narrated to me, from Ibn 'Abbas, that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) proceeded on his journey and set out when ten of Ramadan had passed. He fasted and the people fasted with him until when he was at al-Kadid, he broke fast, then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) proceeded until he descended at Marr al-Zahran among ten thousand Muslims. Sulaym ... and Muzaynah joined. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) descended at Marr al-Zahran, news had been blinded to Quraysh: no news of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) reached them, nor did they know what he would do. That night Abu Sufyan ibn Harb, Hakim ibn Hizam, and Budayl ibn Warqa' went out seeking and looking whether they could find or hear news. When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) descended at Marr al-Zahran, al-'Abbas ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib said: I said: O morning of Quraysh! If the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) enters Makkah by force before they come to him seeking security, it will be the destruction of Quraysh forever. He said: So I sat upon the white mule of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and went out on it until I came to al-Arak, saying: Perhaps I will meet some woodcutter, milk-seller, or needy person who will go to them and inform them of the place of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) so they come out to him. He said: By Allah, while I was riding on it seeking what I went out for, I heard the speech of Abu Sufyan and Budayl ibn Warqa' disputing, Abu Sufyan saying: I have never seen fires or an army like tonight. Budayl said: By Allah, this is Khuza'ah, roused by war. Abu Sufyan said: By Allah, Khuza'ah are too low and vile for these to be their fires and army. I recognized the voice of Abu Sufyan and said: O Abu Hanzalah! He recognized my voice and said: Abu al-Fadl? I said: Yes. He said: What is with you, may my father and mother be ransom for you! I said: Woe to you, this is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) among the people; O morning of Quraysh, by Allah! He said: What is the stratagem, may my father and mother be ransom for you? I said: By Allah, nothing except that you ride behind this beast and I bring you to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him); by Allah, if he captures you he will strike your neck. So he rode behind the mule and his two companions returned. Every time I passed a fire of the Muslims, they said: Who is this? When they looked they said: The uncle of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) upon his mule, until I passed the fire of 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, who said: Who is this? He stood toward me; when he saw him on the back of the beast he recognized him and said: Abu Sufyan, enemy of Allah! Praise be to Allah who has enabled (us) against you. He rushed toward the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), I spurred the mule and outran him as a slow beast outruns a slow man, then I dismounted and entered upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), and 'Umar came and entered, saying: O Messenger of Allah, this is Abu Sufyan; Allah has enabled (us) against him without pact or covenant, so let me strike his neck. I said: O Messenger of Allah, I have granted him protection. Then I sat with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and took hold of his head, saying: By Allah, no man shall converse with him tonight besides me. When 'Umar persisted about him, I said: Gently, O 'Umar! By Allah, had he been of Banu 'Adi ibn Ka'b you would not have said this, but you knew he is a man of Banu 'Abd Manaf. He said: Gently, O 'Abbas! By Allah, your Islam on the day you embraced Islam was dearer to me than the Islam of al-Khattab, and that only because I knew your Islam was dearer to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) than the Islam of al-Khattab. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Take him to your lodging, and in the morning bring him to us. So I took him to my lodging; in the morning I brought him to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). When he saw him he said: Woe to you, O Abu Sufyan, has the time not come for you to testify there is no god but Allah? He said: May my father and mother be ransom for you, how forbearing, generous, and joining you are! By Allah, it almost occurred to me that had there been another with Allah, it would have sufficed something by now. He said: Woe to you, O Abu Sufyan, has the time not come for you to testify that I am the Messenger of Allah? He said: May my father and mother be ransom for you, how forbearing, generous, and joining you are! By Allah, as for this, there is still something in the soul about it until now. Al-'Abbas said: I said: Woe to you, embrace Islam and testify there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah before your neck is struck. So he testified the testimony of truth and embraced Islam. Al-'Abbas said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, Abu Sufyan is a man who loves this pride, so grant him something. He said: Yes; whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is safe, and whoever closes his door upon himself is safe. When I went to leave, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: O 'Abbas, detain him at the narrow pass of the valley by the mountain ridge until the cavalry of Allah pass by him and he sees them. So I detained him where the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded me. The tribes passed by him upon their banners; every time a tribe passed, he said: Who are these? I said: Banu Sulaym. He would say: What have I to do with Banu Sulaym? Then a tribe would pass, and he would say: Who are these? I would say: Muzaynah. He would say: What have I to do with Muzaynah? Until the tribes were exhausted; no tribe passed but he asked me about it and I informed him, and he said: What have I to do with Banu so-and-so? Until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) passed in the green-clad battalion: a squadron of Muhajirun and Ansar of whom nothing was seen but eyes in iron. He said: Glory be to Allah! Who are these, O 'Abbas? I said: This is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) among the Muhajirun and Ansar. He said: No one has power against these. By Allah, O Abu al-Fadl, the kingdom of your nephew has become great this morning. I said: Woe to you, O Abu Sufyan, it is prophethood. He said: Yes indeed. I said: Safety to your people; go out to them. When he came to them he shouted at the top of his voice: O company of Quraysh, this is Muhammad who has come to you with what you have no power against; whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is safe. Hind bint 'Utbah stood to him, seized his mustache, and said: Kill the fat bearded one ... an evil scout of a people. He said: Woe to you, let not this deceive you of yourselves; he has come with what you have no power against; whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan is safe. They said: May Allah fight you, what use is your house to us? And whoever closes his door is safe. Al-Bukhari and Muslim narrated from the narration of al-Zuhri, from 'Ubaydullah ibn 'Abdullah ibn 'Utbah, from Ibn 'Abbas, that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) set out from Madinah with ten thousand, eight and a half years after his arrival in Madinah. He marched with the Muslims to Makkah fasting and they fasting until he reached al-Kadid - a water between 'Usfan and Qudayd - then he broke fast and they broke fast. Al-Zuhri said: What is taken from the matter of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is the latest and latest. This is the wording of the hadith of Ma'mar from al-Zuhri with al-Bukhari, the longest narration. In Muslim's narration there is abridgment.
